2016 Ford C-Max Hybrid Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2016 Ford C-Max Hybrid was new.

Scorecard

Interior: 8.1

According to critics, the 2016 Ford C-Max Hybrid's interior has premium materials, an attractive design, excellent build quality and lots of useful features. Auto writers complain that the base model has confusing radio controls, but they say the new, optional SYNC 3 touch-screen infotainment system is user-friendly. The cabin offers generous headroom, reviewers say, and enough rear-seat legroom for 6-foot adults. Cargo space is poor for a wagon but good for a hatchback and a hybrid.

  • "Ford's newfound status as a leader in interior design and material quality is evident in the 5-door C-Max for 2016. The 5-passenger cabin is filled with attractive, soft-touch surfaces that combine to produce a remarkably upscale feel, particularly for this class of vehicle." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The 2016 C-Max Hybrid's cabin will feel familiar if you've driven a Focus or Escape, which is a very good thing, as those cars all incorporate top-notch materials, solid construction and eye-catching design." -- Edmunds
  • "Materials and design are a pleasant surprise, and the feature content is excellent in both the well-equipped SE and full-boat SEL trims." -- Road and Track (2013)

Seating

The 2016 Ford C-Max Hybrid seats five and comes standard with cloth upholstery. Leather upholstery, heated front seats and a power-adjustable driver’s seat are available.

Reviewers note that there is ample headroom in all seats and enough legroom in the rear for 6-foot passengers. Auto writers appreciate how the high driver's seat provides great outward visibility.

  • "The C-Max's supportive, high-mounted driver seat gives you a slightly more commanding view of the road than you'll get in most wagons and hatchbacks." -- Edmunds
  • "Headroom is overly abundant in all seating positions, and rear legroom is suitable for 6-footers." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "For occupants, the second row in the C-Max is about as spacious as the [Prius] V's, and the Ford's seats are comfortable and supportive." -- Car and Driver (2013)
  • "The C-Max is a tall five-seater that places more emphasis on passenger space than cargo room behind the rear bench. By doing this, Ford was able to create a smallish vehicle that is easy to park in cramped city conditions, but with enough room for four over-6-foot-tall adults to sit comfortably." -- CNET (2013)

Interior Features

The 2016 Ford C-Max Hybrid comes standard with Bluetooth, dual-zone automatic climate control, a six-speaker audio system, an auxiliary audio input, a USB port, a 110-volt power outlet and SYNC, which lets you use voice commands to control infotainment settings. Ford’s MyKey system, which lets you set speed and audio volume limits, is also standard. Available features include push-button start, remote start, color-customizable ambient lighting, a fixed-glass panoramic roof, a nine-speaker Sony audio system, navigation, satellite radio, rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, parallel park assist and the SYNC 3 touch-screen infotainment system, which is new for 2016.

Test drivers appreciate the number of features available in the Ford C-Max Hybrid. The base C-Max Hybrid has complex radio controls, critics say, but they think the new, optional SYNC 3 infotainment system is much better than the old, frustrating MyFord Touch system. Reviewers add that the C-Max Hybrid's parallel park assist system is one of the most user-friendly automated parking systems on the market.

  • "For 2016, the Ford C-Max Hybrid gains some new colors and the addition of the much-improved SYNC 3 voice-activated infotainment system." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "While the base model's radio controls are somewhat complicated to use, the new optional Sync 3 system should be a big improvement compared to the previous MyFordTouch interface. The touchscreen features a revamped menu system and recognizes smartphone-like gestures like swipe and pinch-to-zoom." -- Edmunds
  • "The C-Max is also available with Ford's outstanding automatic parallel-parking system, one of the best and easiest-to-use systems that we've ever tested thanks to its one-button activation and automatic parking-space finder." -- CNET (2013)
  • "Comfort and convenience features abound. …" -- Road and Track (2013)

Cargo

The 2016 Ford C-Max Hybrid has 24.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second-row seats and 52.6 cubic feet when the second-row seats are folded, which is more than most hybrids and hatchbacks, but less than most wagons. The C-Max Hybrid is available with a power liftgate that opens when you wave your foot under the rear bumper. Critics note that it is a useful feature when your hands are full.

  • "The C-Max Hybrid has more cargo capacity than a compact sedan or hatchback, but falls short of similarly priced wagons and SUVs." -- Edmunds
  • "The cargo area offers less space than the new Prius, but is still well within the bounds of what is considered good for a compact wagon." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "There are also a few deceptively simple convenience options that aim to make life easier for the C-Max owner. For example, the foot-activated liftgate. When approaching the vehicle with full hands and the smart-key transponder in pocket, the C-Max user can simply hold one foot momentarily under the C-Max's rear bumper to activate the power liftgate." -- CNET (2013)
