2013 Ford C-Max Hybrid Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2013 Ford C-Max Hybrid was new.

Interior: 7.4

Reviewers say the 2013 Ford C-Max Hybrid has a clean design and better materials than you might expect, given its price. However, they dislike the optional MyFord Touch controls, saying that the electronics in the Toyota Prius v are easier to use. They also note that the Prius v has more cargo space, and that opting for the features they like best in the C-Max Hybrid quickly inflates its price.

  • "Materials are attractive if not lavish, and every control feels like it's of solid quality." -- Edmunds
  • "In addition, the C-MAX provides buyers a nicer interior for the $26,000 starting price, which is about $1,300 less than Prius v. However, the fully-equipped C-MAX with desirable options such as the power lift gate, MyFord Touch with navigation, reverse sensing system and panoramic sunroof, quickly pushes the price tax past $30,000." -- The Detroit Bureau

The 2013 Ford C-Max Hybrid seats five, and most reviewers say the front seats are comfortable and supportive. Though the C-Max Hybrid has slightly more passenger volume than the Toyota Prius v, reviewers are divided on which car has the more comfortable back seat. Though some reviewers say the back seat in the C-Max Hybrid doesn't have as much space as the one in the Prius v, most agree that it's still a place where adults can sit comfortably.

  • "In fact, the car surprises in terms of comfort for the driver and passenger. There's tons of head-room, and interior materials are slightly above average for a car of this price range." -- AutoGuide.com
  • "For occupants, the second row in the C-Max is about as spacious as the V's, and the Ford's seats are comfortable and supportive. When compared to the Prius hatchback, however, the C-Max is slightly larger inside." -- Car and Driver
  • "The C-Max is a tall five-seater that places more emphasis on passenger space than cargo room behind the rear bench. By doing this, Ford was able to create a smallish vehicle that is easy to park in cramped city conditions, but with enough room for four over-6-foot-tall adults to sit comfortably." -- CNET
  • "The cabin of the five-door is comfortable in all four primary seating positions, with impressively generous head, leg and shoulder room (the middle passenger in the second row won't be as comfortable on the slightly taller cushion, but it is fine for short jaunts)." -- Autoblog

Interior Features

The base Ford C-Max Hybrid SE comes with standard Bluetooth and an iPod interface. Trading up to the SEL model adds satellite radio and navigation. Optional features include MyFord Touch touch-screen infotainment controls, a foot-activated automatic tailgate and Ford's Sync infotainment system.

Many reviewers say that MyFord Touch is difficult to use. The C-Max Hybrid also has a number of systems that use the main driver information display to coach more fuel-efficient driving. It's a similar system to the one used in the Ford Fusion Hybrid, and most reviewers say it works well. The C-Max Hybrid also has Ford's self-parallel parking system. Even though most reviewers agree the C-Max Hybrid is small enough to be easy to park in urban areas, they also say that the self-parking system is among the best on the market. Several reviewers also mention the high-tech sound cancelling audio system that they say keeps the C-Max Hybrid quieter than other hybrids.

  • "Unexpected extras were the overhead sound siphons of the active noise cancellation system; these lead us to say we think the car is quieter than the Black Keys in live performance." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "The complex MyFord Touch interface is packed with functionality, but with it comes a significant frustration factor." -- Edmunds
  • "The C-Max is also available with Ford's outstanding automatic parallel-parking system, one of the best and easiest-to-use systems that we've ever tested thanks to its one-button activation and automatic parking-space finder." -- CNET
  • "The Prius v has many similar features and the Toyota system is both faster and simpler to use, though not as easy on the eyes." -- AutoGuide.com

The 2013 Ford C-Max Hybrid has 24.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row, and 52.6 cubic feet when the second row is folded. That's 14.7 fewer cubic feet than in the Toyota Prius v and 14.3 less than the Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen. Though reviewers appreciate the flat load floor in the C-Max Hybrid, they complain that the cargo area is higher than the bumper, making it a bit tricky to load some items. Helping to balance things out, they say, is an available automatic tailgate that opens when you wave a foot under the bumper. Several reviewers say the system is perfect for when you have your hands full.

  • "Our SEL tester also had navigation, hands-free technology, a rear-view camera, and the keyless tailgate that's a must: just insert your toe under the rear bumper, step back, and the door lifts or closes itself." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "You can only understand the appeal of magical liftgates after you've had a child, maybe two." -- Edmunds
  • "Fold the rear seat-backs flat and the C-Max's cargo space opens up with plenty of space for bulky items." -- CNET
  • "The trunk floor is slightly raised from the trunk opening. Not only is it an eyesore, it's a bit inconvenient to lift your cargo an extra few inches to stow it. The raised floor in the trunk is due to the C-MAX's lithium-ion battery pack residing over the rear-wheels, likely a contributing factor to the car's surprising handling." -- AutoGuide.com
