2017 Ford C-Max Energi Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2017 Ford C-Max Energi was new.

Scorecard

Interior: 7.4

The 2017 Ford C-Max Energi's interior is filled with high-quality, soft-touch materials. It has a handsome design and feels more upscale than you may expect from a car of this class. The front seats are supportive and provide a good view of the road. The rear seats are cramped and less comfortable because the positioning of the bulky battery intrudes on space.

  • "Ford's newfound status as a leader in interior design and material quality is evident in the 5-door C-Max for 2016. The 5-passenger cabin is filled with attractive, soft-touch surfaces that combine to produce a remarkably upscale feel, particularly for this class of vehicle." -- Kelley Blue Book (2016)
  • "The C-Max Energi's cabin will feel familiar if you've driven a Focus or Escape, which is a very good thing since these cars all incorporate top-notch materials, solid construction and eye-catching design." -- Edmunds (2016)
  • "Design-wise, the Energi is much like its Focus platform mate inside, with high-quality materials and a modern-looking dashboard." -- Left Lane News (2016)

Seating

The 2017 C-Max Energi seats five and comes standard with cloth upholstery, a leather-wrapped shift knob, and a manual tilt-and-telescopic leather-trimmed steering wheel. Heated front seats and leather-trimmed seats are available.

The C-Max Energi's front seats are comfortable, spacious, and supportive. They are elevated and provide a good visual of the road and plenty of head- and legroom. However, the rear-mounted battery intrudes on rear-seat space. No more than two passengers will be comfortable.

The C-Max Energi's LATCH child-seat system offers two sets of lower anchors in the rear outboard seats and three top tether anchors. The lower anchors are buried in the seats and hard to access. Although child-safety seats are fairly easy to install, the low belt buckles block access to the inboard lower anchors.

  • [The Ford C-Max Hybrid's and C-Max Energi's] voluptuous exterior design pays off inside, where headroom is generous for front- and rear-seat passengers. … The C-Max Energi, however, has roughly five cubic feet less and an awkward hump that hides its larger battery pack. Both have folding rear seats for added cargo versatility. Up front are comfortable, well-bolstered seats." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The supportive, high-mounted driver seat gives you a slightly more commanding view of the road than you'll get in most wagons and hatchbacks." -- Edmunds (2016)
  • "Front-seat comfort is satisfactory, with plenty of height adjustability for the driver's seat. The rear section isn't exactly spacious, but two adults can fit fairly well, and the middle seat makes the Energi a more viable option for growing families." -- Autotrader  (2016)

Interior Features

The 2017 Ford C-Max Energi comes standard with a six-speaker sound system, a rearview camera, dual automatic climate control, blind spot monitoring, and SYNC, which allows you to integrate your smartphone into the infotainment system using voice commands. EcoGuide, which displays how efficiently you're driving, is also standard. Additionally, Ford's MyKey, which allows you to set parameters on things such as speed and audio volume for other drivers, is standard.

Available features include push-button start, park assist, remote start, a nine-speaker sound system, HD Radio, a panoramic glass roof, a power liftgate, a hands-free power liftgate, parallel park assist, predictive traffic and weather, satellite radio, cross traffic alert, heated side mirrors, two USB ports, and the SYNC 3 system, which features an 8-inch touch screen and advanced smartphone-integration capabilities, such as navigation.

The C-Max Energi's SYNC 3 system is easy to use and responds well to voice commands. The touch screen is responsive and features swipe and pinch-to-zoom controls, like on a smartphone. The once optional rearview camera is now standard. Additionally, you can stay connected to your C-Max Energi from almost anywhere with the MyFord app on your smartphone. This app allows you to lock and unlock the C-Max Energi's doors and monitor or schedule charging. It also sets climate control and locates nearby charging stations.

  • "For 2016, the Ford C-Max … gains some new colors and the addition of the much-improved SYNC 3 voice-activated infotainment system." -- Kelley Blue Book (2016)
  • "Ford has dumped its finicky Microsoft-based Sync with MyFord Touch interface in favor of the new Blackberry-based Sync 3 system, which features improved voice controls and menus and brings a lot of smartphone functionality to the 8-inch touchscreen." -- Edmunds (2016)

Cargo

The 2017 Ford C-Max Energi has 19.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the back seats and 42.8 cubic feet with them folded. This is more than most hybrids but less than many wagons. This is because the C-Max Energi's battery is mounted near the rear of the car. It creates a large bump that limits cargo space and lifts the cargo floor, which makes loading items difficult. An available hands-free power liftgate that opens when you wave your foot under the rear bumper will help when your hands are full.

  • "With this nifty feature, it takes only a swipe of a foot under the rear bumper to activate the power-opening hatch door, perfect for when your arms are full of groceries or otherwise occupied." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "A significant downside is the C-Max's cargo capacity. The space needed for the Energi's battery pack beneath the floor of the cargo area reduces the capacity of the rear compartment, which is also fairly narrow. … Worse, the load floor isn't flat when the seats are folded, as the battery pack creates a high shelf behind the rear seats that sits about a foot higher than the load floor." -- Edmunds (2016)
  • "On the downside, it isn't quite as big inside as its crossover-like look would suggest - the big battery intrudes into the cargo area, cutting stowage space behind the rear seats from 24.5 cubic feet in the standard C-MAX to 19.2 in the Energi." -- Left Lane News (2016)
