2015 Ford C-Max Energi Overview

Is the 2015 Ford C-Max Energi a Good Used Car?

Although the 2015 Ford C-Max Energi has some desirable qualities, there are many better choices if you're looking for a wagon or a hybrid vehicle. Its performance is great compared with other hybrids, but it’s just OK against other wagons. Similarly, its fuel economy rating is excellent for a wagon, but nothing to brag about compared to other hybrids. A low predicted reliability score doesn’t help either. The C-Max Energi is a decent car, but you could do better with one of its competitors.

Used 2015 Ford C-Max Energi Performance and Interior

The 2015 Ford C-Max Energi’s sole powertrain is comprised of a four-cylinder engine and an electric motor, which makes 188 horsepower. Acceleration is brisk, which contributes to sufficient passing power on the highway. Its handling is agile for a plug-in hybrid, but the C-Max Energi’s large battery pack makes it less nimble than non-plug-in competitors like the Ford C-Max Hybrid. It gets an EPA-estimated 19-mile range in EV-mode, 88 mpg-e, and 38 mpg city/highway combined. These ratings are good for the class, but plug-in hybrid rivals like the Chevrolet Volt get longer electric ranges. The lithium-ion battery takes about seven hours to charge using a 120-volt outlet and 2.5 hours with a 240-volt outlet.

The interior has high-quality materials, and its raised seating position contributes to good all-around visibility. Passengers will be comfortable in both the front and rear seats, but you will find less cargo space in the C-Max Energi than in many other wagons. The MyFord Touch infotainment system can be finicky to use and slow to process inputs. The voice-activated SYNC system allows drivers to easily pair their devices with the infotainment system. There are two sets of LATCH child-seat connectors on the outboard rear seats and an upper tether on the rear middle seat.

Standard features include leather seats, a six-speaker audio system, dual-zone automatic climate control, an 8-inch MyFord infotainment system, two USB ports, satellite radio, and Bluetooth. Some C-Max models may include navigation, a hands-free power liftgate, HD Radio, a nine-speaker Sony audio system, and a panoramic roof.

How Reliable Is the 2015 Ford C-Max Energi?

The Ford C-Max Energi has a below-average predicted reliability rating of 2.5 out of five from J.D. Power. The C-Max Energi is one of the few wagons to hold such a low rating. By comparison, the Toyota Prius V has a much higher predicted reliability rating of 4.5.

How Safe Is the C-Max Energi?

The C-Max Energi received an overall safety rating of four out of five stars from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Should I Consider Another Used C-Max Energi?

The 2015 C-Max Energi is part of a generation that spans from 2013 to 2017. There were no notable changes for 2015, so you may want to consider shopping for an older model to save some money. That said, the newer 2016 model added an upgraded, much more user-friendly infotainment system. Therefore – if you are willing to spend a little bit more – you will likely be much happier with the 2016 C-Max Energi.

Which Used Ford C-Max Energi Is Right for Me?

The 2015 Ford C-Max Energi comes in one trim: SEL. Some SEL models may come with upgrades, including a hands-free power liftgate, navigation, and a nine-speaker Sony audio system. You might even be able to snag a model with advanced safety features including front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, and active park assist.

Since the C-Max Energi has a low predicted reliability rating, you may wish to buy a certified pre-owned model. For all of its certified pre-owned vehicles, Ford extends the original new-car powertrain warranty to seven years or 100,000 miles and provides a one-year/12,000-mile limited warranty. Each CPO vehicle must pass a 172-point inspection. Additional benefits like towing and roadside assistance may be available, so read the Ford warranty page carefully.

2015 Ford C-Max Energi and Other Cars to Consider

Which Is Better: 2015 Ford C-Max Energi or 2015 Ford C-Max Hybrid?

The non-plug-in 2015 Ford C-Max Hybrid has better safety scores and performance than the C-Max Energi. Both cars offer high-quality interiors and similar passenger space, but they also lack cargo room (especially the C-Max Energi). Unless you want an all-electric vehicle, you’ll be better off with the C-Max Hybrid.

Which Is Better: 2015 Ford C-Max Energi or 2015 Toyota Prius Plug-in?

The 2015 Toyota Prius Plug-in is an affordable small car with abundant cargo room and a comfortable ride. If you are looking for a car that is fun to drive, however, this isn’t it. This Toyota suffers from poor acceleration and lackluster handling, as well as a shorter all-electric driving range than the Ford. However, the Prius Plug-in’s outstanding reliability and lower annual fuel costs minimize the loss of that range. If you are looking for a car that has plenty of room for passengers and their luggage, the Prius Plug-in is your best option. The C-Max Energi is a better choice if you care more about performance.
