2014 Ford C-Max Energi Overview

Is the 2014 Ford C-Max Energi a Good Used Car?

The 2014 Ford C-Max Energi is fun to drive, but most other wagons are better vehicles overall. While the C-Max Energi has some of the best fuel economy estimates in the class, you'll get similar – or better – estimates from more reliable rivals like the Toyota Prius v, which also has user-friendly cabin controls. The Ford has the smallest cargo capacity in the class due to its large battery pack.

Used 2014 Ford C-Max Energi Performance and Interior

The front-wheel-drive 2014 Ford C-Max Energi gets its power from a four-cylinder gas engine and two electric motors, which together generate 188 horsepower. Acceleration is instant from a stop, and the C-Max Energi can keep pace with other cars on the highway. However, when using electric power only, the car can struggle to get up to speed on the highway. A continuously variable automatic transmission is standard. The EPA estimates that the C-Max Energi can travel 19 miles on electric power alone, and it has a total gas and electric range of 550 miles.

On gas power, the C-Max Energi gets up to 38 mpg combined city/highway. The C-Max Energi's battery pack can be fully recharged in 7 hours using a standard household outlet, or in 2.5 hours using a 240-volt outlet. The Ford C-Max Energi has accurate steering and maintains control through turns. Its ride, while firm, feels smooth on most roads. The brakes have plenty of stopping power.

The 2014 Ford C-Max Energi has a good-looking cabin made with first-rate materials. It seats five on leather upholstery. Heated and power-adjustable front seats are standard. The C-Max Energi's sizable cabin provides four adults with ample head- and legroom. The high seating position and large windows also create excellent outward visibility all around. The rear outboard seats have complete sets of LATCH connectors for child safety seats. The rear middle seat has an upper tether anchor and the ability to borrow lower anchors from the two other seats. When its second row is folded, the C-Max Energi has 42.8 cubic feet of cargo space, which is small for a wagon. Folding the second row also yields a lower load floor, thanks to the Ford’s large battery pack.

The 2014 Ford C-Max Energi comes standard with dual-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth, a USB port, and an 8-inch touch-screen MyFord Touch infotainment system. Available features include navigation. You might want to avoid models that come with the touch-screen infotainment system, as it's slow to respond to inputs and has frustrating climate and audio controls.

Should I Consider Another Used C-Max Energi?

The 2014 Ford C-Max Energi was introduced in the United States for the 2013 model year. The 2013 C-Max Energi comes with all of the 2014 model's features, but at a lower average price. It’s worth checking it out if you’re looking to save some money.

Which Used Ford C-Max Energi Is Right for Me?

The C-Max Energi comes in just one trim level: SEL. Its standard features include push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 110-volt power outlet, a six-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, a USB port, satellite radio, and the 8-inch touch-screen MyFord Touch infotainment system. You may find used C-Max Energi models with available features like voice-activated navigation, a nine-speaker Sony stereo, a glass panoramic roof, or a foot-activated power liftgate. Some models may also have safety features like active park assist, front parking sensors, or a rearview camera.

With the C-Max Energi's poor reliability rating, you should consider a certified pre-owned model. For all of its certified pre-owned vehicles, Ford extends the original new-car powertrain warranty to seven years or 100,000 miles and provides a one-year/12,000-mile limited warranty. Each CPO vehicle must pass a 172-point inspection. Additional benefits like towing and roadside assistance may be available, so read the Ford warranty page carefully.

2014 Ford C-Max Energi and Other Cars to Consider

Which Is Better: 2014 Ford C-Max Energi or 2014 Ford C-Max Hybrid?

The Ford C-Max Hybrid is the Energi's non-plug-in sibling. Both offer composed handling, spry acceleration, similar fuel economy estimates, and spacious and well-built interiors. They also share a poor reliability rating and a hard-to-use available infotainment system. Choosing between these cars comes down to whether you want to spend a little more for the C-Max Energi's plug-in hybrid technology.

Which Is Better: 2014 Ford C-Max Energi or 2014 Toyota Prius v?

The Prius v is a hybrid wagon that isn't as zippy or fun to drive as the C-Max Energi, but it does offer much more space. Its cargo capacities rival that of a compact SUV, and its interior features spacious rear seats that slide and recline. Additionally, the Prius v gets better fuel economy – 3 mpg more over the C-Max Energi’s combined estimates.
