Escape vs. Equinox: Which American Compact SUV Is Right for You?

Ford versus Chevy. The oldest rivalry in the automotive world is still alive and as relevant today as ever. Today though, the competition is less about muscle cars or even midsize sedans, and more about compact SUVs.

Compact SUVs are the family haulers of today, every bit as much as the Galaxies and Impalas were in their heyday.

Ford gave the Escape a minor refresh for 2017, with a new look and updated safety tech. The 2018 model is essentially a carryover and sits in the top third of U.S. News’ compact SUV rankings. Chevrolet completely redesigned the Equinox in 2018 for the first time since 2010. The new model is slightly smaller and more responsive, with a lineup of turbocharged four-cylinder engines and Chevrolet’s latest MyLink infotainment system. The Equinox now sits more squarely in the heart of the compact SUV market.

So, which one is a better choice for buyers looking to spend the next few years in a small SUV? We’ve used U.S. News scores to decide which SUV is stronger in the categories that compact SUV buyers care about most. Keep in mind that our scores are updated constantly as new expert reviews and data become available. Therefore, the scores mentioned in this slideshow might not match the scores in our rankings and reviews.
