2019 FIAT 500X Performance Review

Performance: 5.7

The 2019 Fiat 500X has a lively engine and is poised on the road, but the ride is firm, and the engine is loud.

  • "The 500X's ride is incessantly stiff and jittery, and impacts punch through strongly. Ride motions are quick and short, making the car feel nervous and unsettled. A long haul on board the 500x, even on the highway, becomes a tiring affair." -- Consumer Reports
  • "The new 1.3-liter turbo has pretty good punch, with a best-in-class 210 lb-ft of torque for quick passing maneuvers." -- Kelley Blue Book

Acceleration and Power

The sole powertrain in the 2019 500X is a new 177-horsepower turbocharged 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine and a nine-speed automatic transmission. The engines from older models, as well as the six-speed manual transmission, were discontinued for 2019.

The turbocharged engine feels peppy, providing ample power for city and highway driving, and the automatic transmission makes responsive shifts. However, the engine makes a lot of noise.

With fuel economy estimates of 24 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway, this Fiat has below-average figures for a subcompact car, even when you factor in its all-wheel drive.

  • "With the new, smaller 1.3-liter engine, you might expect a big drop in horsepower. However, the 500X actually gets a horsepower increase compared to last year's standard 1.4-liter engine. In fact, it almost edges out the previously optional 2.4-liter engine." -- Edmunds
  • "The 500X’s once-loathed 9-speed automatic transmission has redeemed itself, with improved shift timing and better responsiveness to manual inputs. Sadly, a feature that would have made this new engine so much fun, the 6-speed manual, is no longer offered." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "This is a loud car by any measure with engine buzz, idle vibration, and intimate road noise competing for your attention." -- Consumer Reports

Handling and Braking

Although it’s a decent corner-carver, the 500X’s overall driving experience is let down by overly numb steering, grabby brakes, and a stiff ride over uneven pavement. All-wheel drive comes standard.

  • "Standard all-wheel drive helps the 500X better manage corners, and in snow provides the additional traction needed to avoid getting stuck." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The ride may be a bit rough for some, but it shouldn't be objectionable if you're used to a more firmly sprung car." -- Edmunds
  • "Despite its raised ride height, the 500X is fairly responsive in corners and you don't feel much body lean. At least the Fiat engineers got that part of the suspension tuning correct. Still, the steering gives no touchy-feely feedback to your input, removing any enjoyment from the drive. The grabby brakes, particularly at low speeds, are another source of frustration." -- Consumer Reports
