2017 FIAT 500X Overview

Is the 2017 Fiat 500X a Good Used SUV?

The Fiat 500X is a decent option if you’re shopping for a used subcompact SUV. This five-seat Fiat has one of the nicest interiors in its class – replete with quality materials, comfy seats, and easy-to-use tech features. Its sharp steering and lithe handling make it rather fun to drive. The 500X also rates well for crash safety. That said, this SUV disappoints under the hood. The 500X’s wheezy engine and clumsy automatic transmission take the shine off this otherwise fine Fiat. Before you buy, consider more refined alternatives like the 2017 Mazda CX-3.

The 2018 Fiat 500X starts at $19,995, and prices can top $27,000 in some trim levels. You can save thousands of dollars by shopping for a used 2017 500X, especially if you want a base model with few options. There are some perks to buying new, though. You aren’t likely to find a less expensive new SUV, given the 500X’s already low price point. However, there are some hatchbacks with better practicality that are worth considering. The 2018 Kia Soul and 2018 Honda Fit hatchbacks start at around $16,200. Neither offers all-wheel drive like the 500X, but both provide stylish interiors with more rear legroom and cargo space.

Which Used Fiat 500X Model Is Right for Me?

The 2017 Fiat 500X comes in three trim levels: Pop, Trekking, and Lounge. The base model Fiat 500X Pop is available with either of Fiat’s engine options, and it comes standard with four speakers, USB and auxiliary audio ports, keyless entry, power windows, air conditioning, and cloth seats.

However, we recommend the Trekking or Lounge trims, which offer only the 2.4-liter engine. These trims offer more tech features. The Trekking model adds a 5-inch touch screen, satellite radio, Bluetooth, a six-speaker stereo, remote start, fog lights, and alloy wheels. The top-of-the-line 500X Lounge trim adds a 6.5-inch touch screen, a rearview camera, navigation, heated front seats, and dual-zone automatic climate control. Available features include leather upholstery, a Beats sound system, a dual-pane sunroof, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and a suite of active safety features.

What Does Fiat's Certified Pre-Owned Warranty Cover?

Fiat offers a certified pre-owned program for vehicles five years old or less and with fewer than 75,000 miles. Eligibility is determined by the vehicle’s initial sale date. For its certified pre-owned vehicles, Fiat extends the original new-car powertrain warranty to seven years from the original sale date or 100,000 miles. CPO vehicles also get a three-month/3,000-mile Maximum Coverage Care warranty. Additional benefits are available, including a 90-day SiriusXM satellite radio trial subscription, a CarFax vehicle history report, 24-hour towing and roadside assistance, and a car rental allowance. There are mileage and model restrictions, so read the Fiat warranty page carefully.

Fiat has one of the worst CPO programs among affordable carmakers, according to our analysis. Kia, Hyundai, Chevy, Ford, Honda, and Mazda are all better.

2017 Fiat 500X Versus the Competition

Which Is Better: 2017 Fiat 500X or 2017 Honda HR-V?

We named the 2017 Honda HR-V our 2017 Best Subcompact SUV for the Money and 2017 Best Subcompact SUV for Families. The HR-V is certainly no go-kart, but its engine and transmission operate more seamlessly than the 500X’s. The Honda also outshines its Fiat rival with roomier back seats, a larger cargo bay, a smoother ride on rough pavement, and higher fuel economy (up to 28/34 mpg). The one area where the 500X has a big advantage is safety features – the HR-V only offers blind-spot and rearview cameras. Still, the HR-V is the better pick for most shoppers.

Which Is Better: 2017 Fiat 500X or 2017 Mini Cooper Countryman?

The redesigned 2017 Mini Countryman is another stylish option in this class. Both the 500X and Countryman have retro-inspired cabins with quality materials, sleek exteriors, and user-friendly infotainment systems. However, the Countryman is a better subcompact SUV overall. Its turbocharged engines and well-mannered transmissions serve up zippier acceleration. There’s also more cargo and rear seat space. Go with the Mini.

2017 500X Performance

How Does the 2017 Fiat 500X Drive?

The Fiat 500X has two four-cylinder engine options: a 2.4-liter with 180 horsepower and a turbocharged 1.4-liter with 160 horsepower. Both power plants have their drawbacks. The 2.4-liter engine sounds coarse under hard acceleration, and it drags the 500X up to speed rather slowly. It’s also paired exclusively with a nine-speed automatic transmission that tends to clunk into gear at low speeds and feels reluctant to downshift when necessary at higher speeds. The turbocharged engine provides zippier pickup, but it’s only available with a six-speed manual transmission – a configuration most shoppers aren’t looking for.

The 500X continues to hit and miss with its driving dynamics. The SUV feels stable around turns, and a tight turning radius makes it a cinch to park. Its steering is responsive as well and the brakes slow the SUV confidently. That said, the 500X’s ride quality is rather firm, especially when equipped with its larger available wheels. Front-wheel drive is standard with both engines; all-wheel drive (AWD) is available with the 2.4-liter engine.

Does the 2017 Fiat 500X Get Good Gas Mileage?

The 500X gets 25 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway with its 1.4-liter engine, which is decent by class standards. The 2.4-liter engine drops these fuel economy estimates even lower to 22/30 mpg city/highway (21/29 mpg with AWD).

2017 Fiat 500X Towing Capacity

The 500X is rated to tow up to 1,000 pounds, when properly equipped with its 2.4-liter engine and all-wheel drive.

2017 500X Interior

How Many People Does the 2017 500X Seat?

The Fiat 500X is a 2-row SUV with five seats. The front seats are cozy, with a nice driving position and ample head- and legroom. The rear seats are comfortable as well, but legroom is a bit too low for adults – kids and younger teens should fit just fine. Cloth seats are standard; heated and leather seats are available. The 500X’s high point is definitely its cabin styling, which is just as funky as its exterior. The dashboard has a handsome design, and most interior materials have a quality look and feel.

How Many Car Seats Fit in the 2017 Fiat 500X?

The 500X has two full sets of LATCH connectors for securing child car seats. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the SUV’s LATCH system the second-lowest rating of Marginal for ease of use, citing some anchors that are hard to access and difficult to maneuver around.

2017 Fiat 500X Features

Standard features include a four-speaker stereo with USB and auxiliary audio ports. A navigation system, 5- and 6.5-inch touch screens, satellite radio, Bluetooth, and a Beats sound system are available.

The audio and climate controls are about as simple as they get, and they’re easy to find and use while driving. Both of the Uconnect touch screens are user-friendly, and they react promptly to inputs. That said, the larger 6.5-inch screen is noticeably easier to read from the driver’s seat.
