2019 FIAT 500L Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 7.0

The 2019 Fiat 500L has spacious seats and lots of storage space (particularly with the rear seats down), and its infotainment interface is one of the easiest to use. Unfortunately, the 500L's interior materials and seat comfort fall flat alongside similarly priced cars.

  • "Inconsistent panel gaps, less than stellar paint, and below-average fit and finish inside hurt the 500L's score. Most competitors feel better from behind the wheel. Many controls feel hollow and don't give an impression of quality." -- Edmunds
  • "Fiat's interior design brings new life to small-car design, and should be the standard by which all others are judged. From the handsome color options to features like the panoramic sunroof, the 500L offers an interior as handsome as it is versatile." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)
  • "Speaking of the 500L's cabin, some of the trims could be a little more upscale. Considering a well-equipped model can get well north of $25,000, the controls can seem cartoonish at times -- a trait that works a lot better on the less-expensive 500 subcompact." -- Autotrader (2016)

Seating

The 500L comes with seating for five, cloth upholstery, and a leather-wrapped shift knob and steering wheel. The rear seats have a 60/40 split and can fold, tilt, and slide. Seating upgrades include leather-trimmed seats and heated front seats.

The 500L has lots of space for passengers. This is especially true in the back seat, which has more legroom than most cars this size and no hump in the floor for middle-seat passengers to straddle. Stiff, thin cushions hinder comfort on long trips, however. Visibility gets mixed reviews, with some critics praising it and others complaining that the roof pillars make it less than ideal. Other reviewers note that the driving position is awkward.

  • "We're also impressed with the 500L's interior. It looks big on paper with ample legroom and headroom in all directions. But in practice, it's somehow even bigger. The 500L may owe this to its impressively large windows, which provide excellent visibility in every possible direction. They give the cabin a light, airy feel that makes it seem like a vehicle twice its size." -- Autotrader
  • "Though it can manage short trips well, the 500L isn't a confident or comfortable road tripper. Its stiff ride and hard seat bottoms make it a poor choice for journeys lasting more than an hour." -- Edmunds
  • Inside, the tall cabin is fairly quiet and getting in and out is as easy as it gets. But the driving position is awkward, forcing drivers to sit with stretched arms and bent knees, and the front seats are too flat and squishy to be comfortable. Rear passengers can stretch out, enjoying a well-shaped seat and flat floor." -- Consumer Reports (2018)

Interior Features

The 500L's infotainment system is one of the easiest to learn and use. Its menus are arranged in a logical fashion, and you can set the bottom menu icons to your favorite shortcuts. In addition to the Uconnect interface, this system comes with a 7-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, a USB port, and a six-speaker audio system. Every 500L also comes with a rearview camera.

An upgraded infotainment system with navigation and satellite radio is available. Other optional features include a BeatsAudio premium sound system, dual-zone automatic climate control, a dual-pane panoramic sunroof, ambient LED lighting, and rear parking sensors.

  • "One of the perks from the Chrysler merger was the acquisition of the excellent Uconnect infotainment system. In the 2018 500L, the setup includes a bright and user-friendly 7-inch color touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto with optional navigation and BeatsAudio upgrades." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)
  • "Mounted high on the dashboard, the radio controls have a touch-screen layout similar to the Chrysler Uconnect system that we like in other vehicles. It has traditional volume and tuning knobs and physical buttons for selecting the desired mode. Preset buttons and other more complicated functions are on-screen. Fonts are easy enough to read and system logic is simple and intuitive." -- Consumer Reports (2018)
  • "The trip computer button's location at the end of the wiper stalk is odd, but large air-conditioning knobs, legible displays, and logical placement of most controls make the 500L easy to operate." -- Edmunds (2018)

Cargo

The 500L's cargo area measures 22.4 cubic feet with the rear seats in place and up to 68 cubic feet with both seats folded down. That's a decent amount of room for a small car, and it’s more total space than most wagons provide. Some reviewers note that loading oversized items in the back can be difficult, as the 500L has a high liftover height, and its back seat doesn't lay completely flat.

  • "The 500L is pretty roomy, with cargo space of 68 cubic feet and behind-the-rear-seat space of 21.3 cubic feet." -- Edmunds
  • "Cargo space is relatively roomy, with two tiers for stacking items or hiding valuables." -- Consumer Reports (2018)
  • "The 500L's interior offers room for five adults and loads of storage bins hidden throughout the car." -- Left Lane News (2017)
