2018 FIAT 500L Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2018 FIAT 500L was new.

Interior: 7.6

The 2018 Fiat 500L has a well-styled interior, but the materials quality is underwhelming and creates a low-rent feeling. The seats match this “looks nicer than they are” vibe, as they have decent space but little support. There aren’t many tech features, but the ones you get are user-friendly. The 500L has a higher maximum cargo capacity than many competitors.

  • "The padded upper dash is a nice touch in this class, but the stalks, buttons and levers generally have a hollow feel that does not impart a sense of quality." -- Edmunds (2016)
  • "We aren't completely sold on the interior materials, which seem a little more Spartan than we'd like." -- Autoweek (2014)
  • "Interior design is stylishly Italian in character although most of the surfaces are hard plastic." -- Newsday (2014)

The 500L seats five and comes standard with cloth upholstery. Leather upholstery and heated front seats are available. The 500L has large doors, so it’s easy to get in and out of both rows. Both rows of seats have plenty of space, and adults can comfortably ride in the back. However, the seats lack adequate support and get uncomfortable on long drives. Additionally, it’s tough to find a suitable driving position.

If you have small children, you'll appreciate the two sets of LATCH connectors in the second row. The anchors are easy to find unless the rear seats are slid all the way back. And while the rear seat provides decent space, it may not give you enough room to install a car seat without moving the front seats forward – a potential problem if you're a taller driver.

  • "Inside, the tall cabin is fairly quiet and getting in and out is as easy as it gets. But the driving position is awkward, forcing drivers to sit with stretched arms and bent knees, and the front seats are too flat and squishy to be comfortable. Rear passengers can stretch out, enjoying a well-shaped seat and flat floor." -- Consumer Reports
  • "The front seats are highly adjustable, but a good outward view demands a wholly upright seating position, which hurts comfort. The seat bottoms, both front and rear, are extremely hard. The rear seatbacks are rather upright." -- Edmunds
  • "… the 500L has a 3-person rear bench that can comfortably fit two adults. Rear legroom is impressive, and the rear seats also recline, slide, flip and tumble forward for cargo/passenger versatility. Headroom in all seats is sky-high." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)

Interior Features

The 500L comes standard with a rearview camera, a six-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, a USB port, and the Uconnect infotainment system with a 7-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.

Available features include a six-speaker Beats audio system, satellite radio, a dual-pane panoramic sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, rear parking sensors, and an upgraded Uconnect infotainment system with navigation.

The Uconnect infotainment system has an intuitive interface and an easy-to-see screen, but the touch-screen buttons are small and can be hard to hit. There are physical controls for some functions, and the well-arranged dash makes it easy to find the switches you need. Despite these positives, it’s worth noting that many cars in the class offer more features than this Fiat, particularly when it comes to active safety technology.

  • "Chrysler's Uconnect touch-screen system is quite intuitive, but its small on-screen buttons can be hard to hit precisely." -- Consumer Reports
  • "The trip computer button's location at the end of the wiper stalk is odd, but large air-conditioning knobs, legible displays, and logical placement of most controls make the 500L easy to operate." -- Edmunds
  • "Uconnect bundles audio, hands-free phone connectivity, navigation, and more into one easy-to-use touch-screen system." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)

When it comes to maximum cargo capacity, the 500L is a fine hauler. Fold the rear seats down, and you have 68 cubic feet of room. With the rear seats up, however, you get just 22.4 cubic feet, which is only a few cubes more than the lowest totals in the class (with all seats in use).

You may have some trouble loading large or heavy items due to the 500L’s high liftover height. Additionally, the rear seats don’t fold completely flat, which may bother some people. There’s a lot of small-item storage inside, and the front seat folds flat to make it easier to transport large items.

  • "Cargo space is relatively roomy, with two tiers for stacking items or hiding valuables." -- Consumer Reports
  • "The 500L's interior offers room for five adults and loads of storage bins hidden throughout the car." -- Left Lane News (2017)
  • "… the 500L's real-world utility is hampered by a high cargo liftover height and rear-seat backrests that don't fold totally flat." -- Edmunds (2016)
