2017 FIAT 500L Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2017 FIAT 500L was new.

Interior: 7.7

Some cars have a level of luxury that far exceeds their price tag. The 2017 Fiat 500L is not one of them. Though the overall design is somewhat stylish, the interior includes hard plastics and other low-grade materials that make it feel cheaper than class rivals. The front seats are roomy but not all that supportive, but the rear seats provide enough room for adult passengers. Some class rivals have more cargo space with all seats in use, but the 500L has one of the highest max capacities in the class.

The most notable tech feature is the Uconnect infotainment system, which has a responsive touch screen and an easy-to-use interface. But if you’re looking for driver assistance features, it’s best to explore other options.

  • "The padded upper dash is a nice touch in this class, but the stalks, buttons and levers generally have a hollow feel that does not impart a sense of quality." -- Edmunds (2016)
  • "We aren't completely sold on the interior materials, which seem a little more Spartan than we'd like." -- AutoWeek (2014)
  • "Interior design is stylishly Italian in character although most of the surfaces are hard plastic." -- Newsday (2014)

The 500L seats five and comes standard with cloth upholstery. Leather upholstery and heated front seats are available. The front seats are generally comfortable, and they’re wide enough for most drivers. However, there isn’t a lot of side support, so you may find them less comfortable on curvy roads. The rear seats, which slide and recline, provide enough space for adults and have plenty of legroom.

If you have small children, you'll appreciate the two sets of LATCH connectors in the second row. The anchors are easy to find unless the rear seats are slid all the way back. And while that sliding seat provides extra space, it still may not give you enough room to install a car seat without moving the front seats forward – a potential problem if you're a taller driver.

  • "The front seats are wide and comfortable, but they are also stiff and not especially supportive in spirited driving." -- Edmunds (2016)
  • "… the 500L has a 3-person rear bench that can comfortably fit two adults. Rear legroom is impressive, and the rear seats also recline, slide, flip and tumble forward for cargo/passenger versatility. Headroom in all seats is sky-high." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)
  • "On the road, the tested 500L Pop was unexpectedly comfortable and quiet, thanks to liberal use of sound deadening materials and acoustic glass. Wind and mechanical sounds were mostly nonexistent, though some tire noise intruded depending on the road surface." -- Newsday (2014)

Interior Features

The 500L comes standard with a six-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, a USB port, and Fiat's Uconnect infotainment system with a 5-inch touch screen. Optional features include a six-speaker Beats audio system, satellite radio, a dual-pane sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, a rearview camera, rear parking sensors, and an upgraded Uconnect infotainment system with a 6.5-inch touch screen and navigation.

The Fiat 500L doesn’t have the longest list of standard features, but that list does include the user-friendly Uconnect touch-screen infotainment system. Uconnect is responsive, and you won’t struggle to navigate the menus. The system also features redundant physical buttons for most functions if you prefer not to use the touch screen.

Driver assistance features are not a strong point for the 500L. There are no standard active safety features, and the only options are a rearview camera and rear parking sensors. Many competitors offer more advanced driver assistance features, such as adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, and forward collision warning.

  • "Both of the 500L's touchscreens work well, but we're particularly fond of the optional 6.5-inch touchscreen, as its quick processing times and large icons make it easier to use." -- Edmunds (2016)
  • "Uconnect bundles audio, hands-free phone connectivity, navigation, and more into one easy-to-use touch-screen system." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)
  • "It's easy to sync it with a phone for music and calls, and navigation proved straightforward." -- USA Today (2014)

The 500L’s cargo space is both good and bad, depending on how you look at it. With the rear seats up, the 500L has 22.4 cubic feet of cargo space, which is less than what many class rivals offer with all seats in use. However, the 500L has one of the largest maximum capacities in the class (with the rear seats folded), at 68 cubic feet.

The cargo floor has a high liftover height, so it may be difficult to load heavier items. Organizing the back can be challenging as well because the floor isn’t flat with the rear seats folded. On the bright side, there is ample small-item storage throughout the cabin, and the front seat folds flat to make it easier to transport large items.

  • "The 500L's interior offers room for five adults and loads of storage bins hidden throughout the car." -- Left Lane News
  • "… the 500L's real-world utility is hampered by a high cargo liftover height and rear-seat backrests that don't fold totally flat." -- Edmunds (2016)
  • "During the event, my driving partner also commented that her son's hockey bags would be no problem for the rear section, something she couldn't say about the 500." -- AutoWeek (2014)
