2016 FIAT 500L Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2016 FIAT 500L was new.

Interior: 7.4

Most auto journalists write the 2016 Fiat 500L's cabin has lots of hard plastics and flimsy controls which make it feel low-rent. Still, some think the cabin has a stylish design. Reviewers say the front seats are comfortable, though not very supportive, and they add there's plenty of headroom in both rows. The Uconnect infotainment system is easy to use, according to critics. The 500L has more overall cargo room than most competitors.

  • "The padded upper dash is a nice touch in this class, but the stalks, buttons and levers generally have a hollow feel that does not impart a sense of quality." -- Edmunds
  • "We aren't completely sold on the interior materials, which seem a little more Spartan than we'd like." -- AutoWeek (2014)
  • "Interior design is stylishly Italian in character although most of the surfaces are hard plastic." -- Newsday (2014)
  • "Interior materials are mostly good, save for a few cheap-feeling plastics here and there." -- Jalopnik (2014)

There are seats for five in the 2016 500L. Cloth upholstery is standard, while leather upholstery, heated front seats and power-adjustable lumbar support for the driver’s seat are optional. Test drivers report the front seats are decently comfortable but don't offer much support. There's plenty of headroom in both the front and back, according to some critics, and they note that there is sufficient space for adults in the rear seats. Others mention that the cabin is well-insulated from exterior noises.

  • "The front seats are wide and comfortable, but they are also stiff and not especially supportive in spirited driving." -- Edmunds
  • "… the 500L has a 3-person rear bench that can comfortably fit two adults. Rear legroom is impressive, and the rear seats also recline, slide, flip and tumble forward for cargo/passenger versatility. Headroom in all seats is sky-high." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)
  • "On the road, the tested 500L Pop was unexpectedly comfortable and quiet, thanks to liberal use of sound deadening materials and acoustic glass. Wind and mechanical sounds were mostly nonexistent, though some tire noise intruded depending on the road surface." -- Newsday (2014)
  • "The seats are also relatively comfortable, if on the flat side, and the door armrests are hard and undersized." -- Automobile Magazine (2014)

Interior Features

The 2016 Fiat 500L comes standard with a six-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, a USB port and Fiat's Uconnect infotainment system with a 5-inch touch screen. Optional features include a six-speaker Beats audio system, satellite radio, a dual-pane sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, a rearview camera, rear parking sensors and an upgraded Uconnect infotainment system with a 6.5-inch touch screen and navigation.

Test drivers agree Uconnect responds quickly to inputs and is easy to use. Some add that syncing your phone with the system is simple and others like that there are physical controls along with the touch screen.

  • "Both of the 500L's touchscreens work well, but we're particularly fond of the optional 6.5-inch touchscreen, as its quick processing times and large icons make it easier to use." -- Edmunds
  • "Uconnect bundles audio, hands-free phone connectivity, navigation, and more into one easy-to-use touch-screen system." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)
  • "It's easy to sync it with a phone for music and calls, and navigation proved straightforward." -- USA TODAY (2014)
  • "As much as I gripe about infotainment systems in cars, this is probably one of the better ones I've sampled. The menus are fairly intuitive, they don't lag, and the inclusion of actual, physical buttons below the screen make it easy to navigate." -- Jalopnik (2014)
  • "Everything is laid out well, easy to use, and fonts are large and clear." -- Automobile Magazine (2014)

The 2016 500L has 22.4 cubic feet of cargo room behind the rear seats, which is less than most rival wagons offer. Still, with its rear seats folded, cargo capacity increases to 68 cubic feet, which is among the largest in the class. Some test drivers report there's plenty of small-item storage throughout the cabin and ample cargo room in the back for hauling gear. A few critics note the cargo area’s load floor isn't flat with the rear seats folded, and it has a high liftover height.

  • "… the 500L's real-world utility is hampered by a high cargo liftover height and rear-seat backrests that don't fold totally flat." -- Edmunds
  • "The 500L's interior offers room for five adults and loads of storage bins hidden throughout the car." -- Left Lane News (2015)
  • "During the event, my driving partner also commented that her son's hockey bags would be no problem for the rear section, something she couldn't say about the 500." -- AutoWeek (2014)
  • "As such, the 500L boasts best-in-class overall interior space, as well as best-in-class cargo space, rivaling small minivans and mid-size SUVs in the category." -- Boston Globe (2014)
