2019 FIAT 500 Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 6.6

The 2019 Fiat 500 boasts solid front-seat space, unique styling, and a user-friendly infotainment system. However, there are just as many negatives as positives. For one, most of its cabin materials are subpar, consisting mostly of hard plastics. Add in its limited rear-seat space and minuscule cargo capacity, and the 500's interior just doesn’t cut it among its competitors.

  • "Inside, the quirks continue with a stylish cabin that's quite clearly a more special environment than those found in subcompact cars of a similar price." -- Autotrader
  • The tidy interior has some eye-catching details and nicely textured and perforated cloth-and-leatherette seats. Most of the plastics are hard to the touch, though, and the carpet and headliner feel cheap." -- Consumer Reports (2018)
  • "Hard plastics are more prevalent in the Fiat 500 than in its competition. The surfaces feel flimsy and have a tendency to creak. For the most part, the interior falls short of the standard set by the Mini Hardtop." -- Edmunds (2018)

Seating

Up to four people can fit into the 500's cabin. Cloth upholstery is standard, and leather-trimmed upholstery and heated front seats are available. Unless you opt for the optional sunroof, the front seats are pretty roomy. Headroom is limited with the sunroof. The lack of a telescoping steering wheel may also make it hard for drivers to find a comfortable position. The rear seats are extremely limited on space.

  • Space-wise, this is quite obviously a small car, but the front seat should provide more than enough space for even tall drivers, so long as you avoid the optional sunroof. However, all passengers in back should feel squished -- not necessarily because of legroom, as the tall seat is actually surprisingly good in that regard, but because of a negligible amount of headroom." -- Autotrader
  • "All-around visibility is good with the top up, but when the top is fully retracted, it severely blocks the view rearward to the point that even large city buses can be hidden from view. A standard rearview camera helps getting out of parking spots." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • Fiat's subcompact 500 … is roomier up front than you might expect, and just as tight in back as it looks." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)

Interior Features

The 500 comes with a solid list of standard features, including the Uconnect infotainment system with a 5-inch touch screen, six speakers, Bluetooth, two USB ports, and voice command. Available features include navigation, and a Beats premium audio system.

The standard infotainment system is easy to use. However, the audio and climate push buttons aren't as straightforward as a regular control knob.

  • "Fiat has also infused the 500 in recent years with a more up-to-date Chrysler touchscreen, which has improved functionality considerably." -- Autotrader
  • The primary controls are simple in terms of layout and operation, but they're also limited in functionality." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "The radio uses laborious push buttons instead of knobs to adjust volume and tuning. Thankfully, the steering wheel has handy auxiliary controls. It takes a while to get used to the window switches; they're next to the shifter rather than on the door. It's too easy to accidently shut off the electronic stability control system because of the location of the switch on the console." -- Consumer Reports (2018)

Cargo

Cargo space is limited in the 500. There's 9.5 cubic feet of space when the rear seats are up, and that expands to 30.1 cubic feet when the 50/50 split-folding rear seats are folded down. With Cabrio models, you'll have even less room, at just 5.4 cubic feet.

  • "The cabriolet's trunk only measures 5.4 cubic feet, roughly half the capacity of the hatchback model. The tiny opening hampers usefulness. It's a struggle to get a carry-on suitcase to fit." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "The tiny backseat sits ahead of an afterthought of a cargo area." -- Cars.com (2013)
