2017 FIAT 124 Spider Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2017 FIAT 124 Spider was new.

Scorecard

Interior: 8.1

On the inside, the 2017 Fiat 124 Spider is incredibly similar to the Mazda Miata, but it feels a little more upscale thanks to the high-quality materials, particularly the leather adorning the seats in Lusso and Abarth trims. The interior is quiet at highway speeds, despite the soft top. And if you want to put the top down, you'll find that it's an easy and quick exercise.

While the Spider has few standard features, it does offer many entertainment and driver assistance options. Like many roadsters, the Spider is short on cargo space, only offering enough room for a few small pieces of luggage.

  • The interior is Miata, top (literally) to bottom. The only noteworthy departure is the seating. Fiat offers a leather upgrade on Lusso models and Alcantara-wrapped Recaro seats in the Abarth model. They'll also throw some pleather on the dash in the Lusso just to make things a little more pleasing to the eye, but that's about it. It's the same tight-fitting, frills-and-storage-free environment you find in Mazda's roadster." -- Left Lane News
  • "The Lusso's interior is tastefully rich enough that it could have been an Alfa." -- Automobile Magazine
  • The interior on the base model is a bit cheap, but at $24,995 before destination charges, that's not that unusual. Spring for the Lusso model at $27,495, and you get gorgeous saddle-colored leather seats and everything's all very nice." -- Jalopnik

Seating

The 124 Spider fits squarely into the roadster mold, featuring only two seats. Cloth upholstery comes standard, and leather upholstery is available. Heated seats are also available, which take the edge off of icy seats on a chilly morning. The seats are quite comfortable, but they may not have enough head- and legroom for taller passengers. Abarth models come standard with sport seats, which provide extra side support in case you want to take advantage of the Spider's corner-carving abilities.

  • "With the Fiat MultiAir sitting low and back in the cab-rearward chassis to create an almost front-mid-engine layout, there is still no space for a glovebox. The catalyst intrudes under the left side of the passenger's footwell, and my drive partner, who's a few inches taller than my 5-foot-11 frame, complained of a cramped passenger seat. It doesn't have as much fore-aft travel adjustment as the driver's seat, and his knees were up close to where the glovebox would be." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "It's in less subjective areas like passenger comfort where the 124 Spider truly distinguishes itself. Interior space is essentially identical to the Miata but enhanced sound deadening and Fiat-specific suspension tuning result in a quieter, more pleasant ride. Truth be told if tasked with a long-distance journey up the coast I'd choose the Fiat." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Most important, the folding soft top has a piece of aluminum sewn into it, as well as foam padding. The result is that when the top is up, the Fiata is much quieter inside than the Miata. Two people can actually carry on an inside-voice conversation at 85 mph. The much-improved roof—which you can still easily raise and lower with one hand-might be the single biggest differentiator between the Miata and the Fiata." -- Motor Trend

Interior Features

Standard features in the 124 Spider include a manual convertible soft top, push-button start, Bluetooth, and a four-speaker audio system with two USB ports. Available features include automatic climate control, satellite radio, a nine-speaker Bose audio system, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, and the Fiat Connect infotainment system with a 7-inch touch screen, navigation, and smartphone app integration.

The 124 Spider doesn't offer a lot in the way of standard features, though it does have Bluetooth, providing easy connectivity for your phone. Perhaps the most enjoyable standard feature is the convertible top. It allows you to enjoy top-down cruising on a beautiful day, and you can open it quickly and easily with one hand while seated in the driver's seat.

There are several optional entertainment features. A nine-speaker Bose audio system delivers premium sound, and satellite radio gives you plenty of listening options to enjoy. The available Fiat Connect infotainment system is incredibly similar to the system found in Mazda vehicles. The touch input only works while the vehicle is stopped, but there is a physical control knob for all other times, which is fairly easy to use.

Though some people consider active safety features to be the purview of a family vehicle, the truth is that everyone wants to be a little safer while they're behind the wheel. The Spider is available with some basic systems like a rearview camera and rear cross traffic alert, but it also offers features that can help you avoid trouble on the highway, such as blind spot monitoring.

  • At the center of the dash is the Fiat Connect infotainment system, which is perfectly identical to the Mazda Connect system in the Miata, aside from displaying a Fiat logo on the splash screen at startup. It has the same physical controller on the center console and the same 7-inch display, which features touch input but only when the roadster is stopped. I'm not a huge fan of this system, but it gets the job done with decent navigation and basically stays out of the way while I'm driving, which is pretty much all that I need it to do." -- CNET
  • "The Spider's most appealing feature isn't inside the car, but outside - that big blue sky that most drivers would never notice. Unlike the complicated electrically operated mechanisms that usually crank tops up and down, the 124 has one of the most simple, easy-opened tops we've ever seen. It's a 5-second operation, and the latching and unlatching is easy. It encourages drivers to open the roof at even a hint of sunshine." -- USA Today
  • The interior is damn near standard Miata in almost every single way. The switches are the same, the infotainment system is all the same, and the lights are the same. The little shift light is the same. Even the click-wheel you used to select the radio setting is the same. It's really, really familiar." -- Jalopnik

Cargo

Cargo space probably isn't your top priority if you're looking at a roadster like the 124 Spider, and that's a good thing, because it doesn't have much. The 4.9 cubic feet of trunk space is barely enough for a couple of small bags. And while the Spider's trunk is much smaller than most class rivals', it is still larger than the trunk of other two-seat convertibles like the Mazda Miata and Nissan 370Z.

  • "The Fiata is about 5 inches longer than the Miata, though the wheelbases are identical. Some of that extra length shows up in the front overhang, but most of it can be found in the noticeably larger, more useful trunk." -- Motor Trend
  • The biggest drawback to the car is the tight quarters. Though Fiat boasts the car's trunk is more capacious than other roadsters, we couldn't fit a lot more in it than a single roller bag." -- USA Today
  • Speaking of the trunk, I was surprised to learn that the Fiat's boot is bigger than that of the Miata. … It's still a small cargo area. I estimate that there's maybe room for two small weekend bags." -- CNET
