These Vehicles Are in the Price and Performance Sweet Spot

Let’s not mince words – $50,000 is a lot of money for a car. However, with the average price of a new car hovering around $36,000, according to Kelley Blue Book, it’s not as much as it used to be.

We call $50,000 the sweet spot because, at that price, you’re stepping above the mainstream into an area of the automotive world where the engines get more powerful, the suspensions more sophisticated, and the pedigrees more impressive. Yet, you’re not quite in the stratosphere, where German twin-turbo V8s propel vehicles from the mid-$80Ks deep into six figures.

Using acceleration data from a variety of sources – mainly manufacturers, Car and Driver, and Motor Trend – as well as information from our new car rankings, we’ve developed a list of the 30 fastest new cars that cost less than $50,000. They’re ranked on the following pages by zero-to-60 time from slowest (a relative term) to fastest. If there’s a tie, we give the win to the model with the lower price. We highlight the performance features that help them in a drag race and in the corners, as well as the interior features that make them unique, pleasant places to spend time.

Keep in mind that, for each model, we’ve focused on the fastest trims available under $50,000. There may be a number of upgrades that would make them faster, but that would also push them past the $50K mark.

We should also mention that we update our U.S. News Best Cars scoring constantly as new expert reviews and data become available. Therefore, the scores in this article may not match the scores on our rankings and reviews pages.
