2017 Dodge Viper Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2017 Dodge Viper was new.

Interior: 6.8

The 2017 Dodge Viper feels somewhat more upscale than previous Viper generations. However, interior quality is still disappointing compared with rivals. The Viper is also uncomfortable, loud, and has poor visibility. Still, its seats have decent space – though they're way too firm. The Viper's infotainment system is one of the easiest to operate in the class.

  • "Though it's a far cry from the bare-bones Vipers of the past, this third-generation Viper still trails behind other similarly priced sports cars in many aspects. You'll find several soft-touch surfaces and quality materials throughout the cabin, but similarly priced competitors do much better. Essentially, the Viper's pricing puts it up against some seriously upscale sports cars, and the interior doesn't reflect that." -- Edmunds
  • "Getting with the changing times, the latest Viper boasts a significantly more comfortable, stylized and attractive interior. But don't think Dodge went too soft on the interior: they also made a point of creating a very driver-focused cockpit-style layout to help drivers extract the most out of their car with minimal distraction." -- Left Lane News (2015)
  • "[The] 2014 Viper is indeed more comfortable and amenity-laden than its predecessors, but it's still basically a street-legal racecar. And what makes it work as a track car hinders it as an ordinary one. The interior is tight, visibility is limited, the ride is rough, and there's the constant roar of the engine and tires." -- Kelley Blue Book (2014)

The 2017 Dodge Viper seats two and comes standard with cloth upholstery and power-adjustable pedals. Leather upholstery and power-adjustable seats are available.

The Viper can be hard to get into because of its door sills, which are high and wide. Its exhaust pipes are mounted on the sides of the car, and they get hot, so you'll need to be careful to avoid them when you're not wearing full-length pants. Seating comfort is minimal, as the Viper's seats are overly firm and lack support for the upper body. However, some will find they offer good space for taller occupants. Visibility is also poor in the Viper because of its low roof.

  • "Getting in and out of the Viper is, at the very least, less than graceful. Depending on your height, there's a clumsy drop into the seats or a two-handed climb required to get out of them. The Viper's cabin is cramped, so taller occupants (over 6 feet, for instance) might have fitment problems. Lateral space is also at a premium since the wide transmission tunnel keeps things very tight. Drivers and passengers that decide on shorts or a dress will have to be cautious too, as the Viper's side exhaust pipes get extremely hot and stepping over them is required to get out of the car." -- Edmunds
  • "Despite its more luxurious trappings and high-tech features, the Viper's cabin still has one major flaw – seats that many drivers regard as seriously uncomfortable. Built by Italian company Sabalt, they look sleek and purposeful, but are quite firm and lacking in necessary upper-body support. The misshapen thrones – along with an extremely stiff suspension – mean the Viper is best left in the garage when the time comes for a long road trip." -- Left Lane News (2015)
  • "Heavily bolstered seats provide plenty of lateral support to hold you in place during enthusiastic driving, but we found them to be fairly uncomfortable for long trips." -- Kelley Blue Book (2014)

Interior Features

Standard features in the 2017 Dodge Viper include a rearview camera, automatic climate control, push-button start, and Dodge's Uconnect infotainment system, which features an 8.4-inch touch screen, voice command recognition, Bluetooth, satellite radio, HD Radio, a USB port, navigation, and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system. The Viper also comes standard with a 7-inch display in the gauge cluster that can show performance data like zero to 60 mph times. An 18-speaker Harman Kardon audio system is available.

The Viper's Uconnect infotainment system is one of the most intuitive systems available. Its touch screen is large and responsive, it has simple controls, and it includes great voice recognition software.

  • "One bright spot is the the (sic) Uconnect infotainment interface, which is one of the better systems available for ease of use and responsiveness." -- Edmunds
  • "Generally regarded as one of the more user-friendly infotainment setups on the market, Uconnect Access integrates most of the snake's audio, navigation and climate control functions into one unit. An 8.4-inch touchscreen mounted on the dashboard is the central component of the system, but redundant buttons and knobs for climate and audio volume and tuning are also included." -- Left Lane News (2015)
  • "The SRT Viper is meant for driving, not fidgeting with electronics. Fortunately, the Viper's Uconnect system is perhaps the most user-friendly infotainment platform available. From its massive 8.4-inch touch screen to its conversational voice-recognition software, Uconnect is the new standard in vehicle connectivity." -- Kelley Blue Book (2014)

The 2017 Dodge Viper has 14.7 cubic feet of trunk space, which is more than many other sports cars. However, a large hump behind the seats narrows the cargo area. There isn't much storage space in the cabin either, aside from a couple of small compartments and pockets.

  • "On paper, the 14.7-cubic-foot trunk capacity is generous, but that's only if you pile your cargo to the roof. The usable space is really limited to a narrow well behind a massive hump." -- Edmunds
  • "Cargo space, too, is stingy, so you'll have to plan your shopping trip accordingly." -- Kelley Blue Book (2013)
