Scorecard

Interior: 9.1

Whereas Dodge interiors used to be subject to reviewers' jokes, the interior of the new Dodge Ram HD trucks impress almost every reviewer who got in them.  The seats are comfortable, materials are top-notch and there are enough optional features to keep most truck buyers happy.

  • "Credit should go to the interior team, which not only paid the Ram HD the same sort of attention it paid to the 1500 in terms of sound insulation, but also gave it all of the upscale storage and comfort amenities as well, including an options list as long as a freight train." -- Car and Driver
  • "Simple, mostly handy layout, though most drivers must stretch to reach dashboard-mounted 4WD controls. The gauges are well placed and clearly marked." -- Consumer Guide
  • "The Ram 2500 takes a page out of the Ram 1500's playbook by offering the best interior among all pickups." -- Edmunds

Seating

The seats in the Dodge Ram HD trucks get almost completely positive reviews.  Though one or two reviewers complain about legroom in the front row, most find any seat in the Ram HDs -- front or back row -- a comfortable place to be.

Three cabs are available on the Ram HD trucks.  A regular cab has just one row of seats, and buyers can choose between buckets, which seat two, or a bench seat, which seats three. The Crew cab has a full back seat bench, bringing the seating capacity to five or six, depending on if there are buckets in the front row. The Meaga cab has best-in-class backseat room and space that some reviewers compare to a limousine.  It has the same seating capacity as the Crew cab.

  • "Seats are comfortable with plenty of room, although the center floor hump eats into passenger foot room. Power-adjustable pedals improve comfort and help shorter drivers sit a safe distance from steering-wheel airbag. [Back seat in the Crew] Cabin wide enough for three, though the center cushion is too short for long-term comfort. There is generous legroom in Crew Cab." -- Consumer Guide
  • "Most of all, the seats are comfortable. I found the seats in the previous-generation Ram heavy-duty trucks tough on my back. It's as if the lower back support was fabricated out of plywood. These new seats feel like La-Z-Boy designed them." -- Detroit News
  • "Buyers who tow long distances will appreciate the Ram's seating improvements, which include better ergonomics and comfort. The seats can be equipped with heat and ventilation for the driver and front passenger. Rear-seat heating is also optional, as is a heated steering wheel." -- PickupTrucks.com

Interior Features

While the base ST trim is fairly basic, it's easy to add options to the Ram HD trucks, either by starting from a more upscale trim (like the Laramie) or choosing add-ons from a features list that reviewers say is expansive.  While adding options can quickly get pricey, you can outfit the Ram HD with features like Bluetooth, Satellite radio, Siruis Backseat TV (which comes with three channels, mainly of kids programming) and uConnect, a hard drive-based music storage system.

While these features are nice for the recreational truck buyer, if you're looking for an HD truck for business, you may do better by going for one of the Ford Super Duty trucks.  They're available with Ford's Work Solutions system, which can outfit the truck with an internet-connected in-truck computer for tracking work and invoices.  You can even get a printer.  A tool management system can alert you when you've forgotten a tool for a particular job -- something contractors might find very handy. The Ford Super Duty trucks even starts at about $1,200 less than the Ram HD trucks.

  • "Two-tone leather seats, top-stitched dash and seat trim, and faux wood dress up the interior in a way that few hard-working HD drivers have ever experienced. A dressy center display conveys comprehensive trip and vehicle-related information." -- Car and Driver
  • "There are all of the high tech features too. There's Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free phone operations, a navigation system and most of the other features you'd expect in a luxury car. This one can just carry more stuff." -- Detroit News
  • "The controls are within easy reach and user-friendly, except for the audio system when it's paired with the optional navigation. In this configuration, the absence of hard buttons and knobs needlessly complicates some of the most basic functions. Fortunately, the steering-wheel-mounted controls help alleviate this problem." -- Edmunds

Cargo

Reviewers say that in-cab cargo is a strong suit for Ram HD trucks. There are available storage cubbies in the floor of the crew and mega cabs -- and those cubbies are waterproof and can be used as coolers. That type of storage isn't offered in the Silverado HD, Sierra HD or Ford Super Duty.

  • "Even more useful for working types are the gabillions of storage cubbies found all over the huge cabin, including a two-tier glovebox and center console, and bins under the rear-seat floor." -- Car and Driver
  • "Plentiful storage cubbies, bins, and wells. Bucket-seat models enjoy a huge, deep center-console storage area. All models have a two-tiered glovebox, although neither tier is particularly spacious. Crew Cabs have floor wells that can be used as coolers." -- Consumer Guide
  • "On the higher trim levels, soft-touch materials and tasteful stitching are abundant throughout the cabin, while the plush seats and metallic accents are almost too nice for work truck status. Interior storage is generous, with plenty of bins and pockets to supplement the dual gloveboxes." -- Edmunds
  • "There are even little cubbies under the floor mats in the second row -- like the ones found on minivans. These are the kind of features that can win truck buyers." -- Detroit News
