2010 Dodge Ram HD Overview

If you're shopping for a heavy duty truck, you're probably looking for something that can handle tough jobs.  And the all-new 2010 Dodge Ram HD trucks, which include both 2500 and 3500 models, are here to work. The Kansas City Star says: "Heavy-duty pickups are the sumo wrestlers of the truck world. They're big, tough and steadfast, ready for anything you can ask of them, including pulling a trailer that is more than twice as heavy as the truck itself. But some big trucks, such as the Ram 2500 Heavy Duty Laramie Mega Cab 4X4 with the Cummins 6.7-liter turbodiesel engine, are equipped more like an upscale car than a work truck."

That's why most reviewers say that the Ram HD trucks are worthy entries into the Heavy Duty Truck class. Reviewers are pleased with the Ram HD's towing and hauling abilities and powerful engines. On top of that, the standard diesel engine on the 3500 (optional on the 2500) comes with an exhaust brake that helps slow the Ram HD -- and its loads -- down without using the brakes. That saves the brakes for when you really need to stop, and helps prevent brake fade.

Reviewers are especially excited about the Ram HD’s comfortable cabin. Inside, they feature some of the more comfortable seats in the class and a long list of optional features, like a hard-drive music storage system, that help time pass quickly on long hauls. Plus, Crew and Mega Cab models feature under-floor storage that's great for tools or muddy boots.

Other Heavy Duty Trucks to Consider

While the Ram HD trucks are nice, they are part of a very competitive class. And though reviewers like the Rams, they also recommend that you check out the competition.

If you're buying a heavy duty truck for work, you may want to consider the Ford Super Duty trucks. They starts at about $1,200 less than the Ram HD truck and offer Ford Work Solutions, which is a computer system geared toward businesses. Work Solutions can track invoices, payments and even help you keep track of tools.  Plus, the Super Duty tow and haul ratings are pretty much the same as the Ram's, so you sacrifice little in terms of power.

  • "…not just the Heaviest Dutiest Rammiest Ram ever, but also the quietest and most comfortable HD truck we can remember." -- Car and Driver
  • "As with the mainstream 1500s the new Ram heavy-duty makes news for impressive ride comfort and competent handling. The diesel engine is both powerful and refined. Improved cabin trappings over the previous generation are a nice bonus. Chevy and Ford loyalists would do well to check out the Dodge heavy duty trucks. As Walter P. Chrysler used to say 'look at all three.' " -- Consumer Guide
  • "But for the 2010 model year, these big rigs -- in all five trim levels -- finally offer interiors and exteriors that are executive worthy, though the truck has blue collar roots. But now architects can finally arrive on job sites in the same vehicle the crews they hire use." -- Detroit News
  • "The 2010 Dodge Ram 2500 is a top pick for a heavy-duty truck that features a top-notch interior and improved ride quality on top of its already impressive towing and hauling capabilities." -- Edmunds
  • "It's a monster machine, which means it's not an especially welcome sight, nor is it the most convenient mode of personal transport in a congested urban setting. But up here, where populations tend to be small and the square miles separating them many, with lots to haul and tow in between, over sometimes challenging roads, the Ram 2500 is a welcome friend." -- Washington Post
