2009 Dodge Ram 1500 Overview

When it was new, reviewers said that the 2009 Ram 1500 has one of the most refined, comfortable rides in the class, thanks to its unique rear suspension. Those reviewers who tested the base V6 engine found it to be lackluster. Most said that the two available V8 engines provide ample power for all situations. Some noted that, at 14/20 mpg city/highway, the more powerful 5.7-liter V8 matched the fuel economy estimates of the base V6 and beat those of the 4.7-liter V8. Those ratings are average for the class. Two- or four-wheel drive were offered when the Ram 1500 was new. Maximum towing capacity is 9,100 pounds, which is slightly less than what the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and Ford F-150 can tow.

Reviewers were pleased with the Ram 1500’s cabin, and said it is attractive, solidly-constructed, fairly straightforward and simple. A regular cab Ram 1500 has seats for up to three, while quad and crew cab models seat up to six. Reviewers said the front seats provide ample comfort and support, while reviewers dubbed the crew cab the most comfortable and spacious cab configuration for back-seat passengers. The Ram 1500 has few notable standard features, including a six-speaker CD stereo with an auxiliary input jack. Features available as options or upper trims when it was new included an upgraded stereo with satellite radio, power windows, locks and mirrors, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather seats, heated, cooled and power-adjustable front bucket seats, Bluetooth, navigation and a rear entertainment system. The Ram 1500 was also available with lockable compartments in the sidewalls of the crew cab bed, which reviewers found handy.

Other Trucks to Consider

The 2009 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 ranks highly for its upscale interior and powerful engines. While it doesn’t have a unique rear suspension to give it a car-like ride like the Ram 1500 has, reviewers said it has a comfortable, buttoned-down ride quality.

Reviewers like the 2009 Ford F-150’s refined interior and strong powertrain, which give it one of the highest tow ratings in the class. The F-150 also has a better safety score than the Ram 1500 does.
