The 2008 Ram 1500's three-seat (six-seat-optional) interior is comfortable and relatively refined, and its Mega Cab version is especially spacious. Nevertheless, the Ram' cabin ranks near the bottom of a competitive class.

Of the Mega, AutoWeek finds that "there really is a ton of room inside, enough to seat seemingly dozens of people (six in reality, quite comfortably), with a limo-esque 44 inches of legroom in the back seat." Cargo space and interior storage for small items also delight almost every reviewer.

Edmunds notes the Mega is the "largest, longest cab in its class, at 142.2 cubic feet and 111.1 inches, respectively." In fact, the cabin is so big that it achieves an impressive list of firsts, including "largest interior cargo volume of any full-size pickup, largest second-row legroom, largest rear-door open angle, at 85 degrees; and the first ever reclining rear seats, which go from a 22-degree seatback angle to 37 degrees."

Equally impressive to reviewers is the quality of the interior in any of the Ram 1500's trim levels and sizes. Motor Trend says the interior "complements the bold exterior by bringing luxury and refinement to new levels in the pickup truck market. Enhanced driver and passenger comfort and more feature content is abundant." However, Consumer Guide writes, "Hard plastic dominates cabin, but materials in line with Ram's rugged character."

A final plus is that the 1500 boasts a cabin that is 20 percent quieter than pre-2005 models, thanks to a combination of laminated front-door glass, improved door seals, new body mounts and liberal use of a special Polymer Constraint Layer (PCL).


With 121.7 cubic feet of passenger volume in the Regular Cab and seating for up to six, the Dodge Ram 1500 doesn't skimp on space. The four-door Quad Cab is even larger, and the newest Mega Cab is absolutely massive. Reviewers report that seats are very comfortable and roomy, though most feel rear seat room could be better in the Regular Cab and Quad Cab models. "Inside, this is -- front or rear -- an exceptionally comfortable pickup. Three adults fit easily in the rear, and up front, the [optional] leather-covered seats are adequately supportive," says the Orlando Sentinel of the Mega Cab model. A Car Place writes that "you really can seat five full-sized adults in comfort."

The front seat in any model size comes standard as a bench that seats up to three. However, two front bucket seats with a center console are optional. Of the Regular Cab's front seat, Cars.com writes, "Three adults fit adequately … when the immense center armrest/storage box is raised." The main criticism reviewers have is that the driver and passengers may have difficulty entering the 1500 due to an extremely high step-in, especially in 4WD models. This is compounded by the fact that running boards are optional only. The Auto Channel notes: "Without running boards it's a long step up into the cabin. I'm able to pull my oversized self in with the help of the steering wheel and the big, solid grab handle. Once up and into the seat … it's firm and comfortable with a good driving position."

The rear bench is where the 1500 really shines. In Mega Cab configuration, it offers an additional 7.5 inches of rear legroom over the Quad Cab. A Car Place writes, "Even with long-legged front passengers, the rear passengers have loads of space to stretch their legs -- and carry briefcases, to boot. This vehicle is the next best thing to a stretched limousine, with a cab a full foot longer than the Ford F250 Crew Cab." USA Today finds that "you could just about sit four across (if there were enough safety belts). The back seat has enough legroom -- 44 inches -- that you can move past people sitting in back without banging against their knees." And Edmunds says, "Even the middle position isn't bad." The Detroit News finds the seat comfortable even after spending hours in the car, noting, "I went through the same drill with its competitors, the GMC Sierra pickup and Ford F-350. There's little doubt that the Dodge truck puts them to shame, in terms of cabin space and comfort."

The Mega Cab's rear seat also offers amenities unique within its class. The Detroit News continues, "The rear of the cabin is where Dodge lavished much of its attention with unusual seats that recline like La-Z-Boy chairs, big bins that hold tools or sports equipment, and the brand's first power-sliding rear window." And though the step-in is high, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel finds entry to the back seat easy "because the Mega Cab has the largest rear-door opening in the industry. It is nearly three feet wide and the door opens almost 90 degrees."

The next cabin size down, the Quad Cab, is less generous with rear seat room. Consumer Guide notes that it has "good head room and [a] comfortably reclined backrest, but can cramp legs with front seats more than halfway back, and narrow door openings hamper entry/exit." Kelley Blue Book finds the Quad's rear bench "a bit upright" and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel notes that "the back seat in the Dodge Quad Cab is tighter than those in the four-door crew cab models of its major competitors, Ford and Chevrolet."

Interior Features

When noting interior accommodations, Automotive.com speaks for many with, "The Ram interior shows attention to details that add utility and convenience." The Laramie trim is particularly luxurious. The Detroit News says, "This Ram isn't just for the construction site, it's for black-tie events like the opera." The reviewer goes on to describe the Laramie's interior as "a very cushy cabin decked out with things like leather-trimmed bucket seats -- the first time they've been available on a Ram -- and luxury features including Sirius satellite radio, a new DVD navigation system with a full screen and convenience items like the Uconnect hands-free phone system."

But other trims aren't quite as well equipped. The base ST includes air conditioning and a single CD player, but conveniences such as power windows, remote keyless entry and reading lights are just optional.


Reviewers generally agree that the 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 offers functional cargo capacity in all three of its cabin sizes. Motor Trend notes that even the Regular Cab "offers just as much flexibility [as the larger cab model], with storage behind rear seats and enough seat travel for ease in reclining of driver and passenger seats." Consumer Guide similarly points out, "Generous storage behind regular-cab seat, where [the] standard plastic storage tray is handy."

The Quad Cab comes with a folding rear seat that flips down to reveal a flat load floor. Edmunds says, "Flip the seats, and rear cargo room is downright cavernous, and with the 85-degree-opening rear doors, even big stuff, such as a large television, will fit nicely in the rear." And unlike some other vehicles, Automotive.com says, "With one hand you can flip the Quad Cab's rear seat down. An optional metal frame then folds into place to create a rigid platform designed to support 500 pounds, useful for carrying cargo." The Mega Cab's second row can slide forward to increase the space behind it. USA Today says the cargo space is "as much as you get in the trunk of a small car."

As for smaller item storage, Car and Driver calls the 1500 "a masterpiece of stowage versatility." The reviewer especially likes the two-story center console: "Its upper compartment, pivoting on hinges, tilts up for access to the lower bin. Brilliant. The hinges for the upper tier, and for the armrest/lid, are satisfyingly rigid. Three cup holders and numerous trays complete the setup." Motor Trend notes that the console "offers room for a laptop computer and features fold-down storage dividers. The center '20' portion of the [40/20/40 front] seat offers additional 'hidden' storage under the cushion."

One of Kelley Blue Book's "favorite features," the console even boasts a 12-volt outlet. A Car Place finds this humorously useful, saying, "The console can actually hold our laptop along with the charger, so that we can charge it up while driving (we don't really recommend this because some laptops and chargers generate heat in the process.)" An overhead console offers "an effective pair of map lights, a trip computer, a compartment for sunglasses, and a compass, which every self-respecting truck should have," says Automotive.com. Finally, A Car Place raves about the "best-in-class-beyond-all-doubt ratcheting cup holders" that "can hold large or small containers tightly."
