Buying Advice

Last Updated: June 7, 2019

Cooling Sales: The Dodge Journey currently sits in the middle of the midsize SUV sales rankings. Dealerships have sold 5.6% fewer Journeys relative to the same span last year. Even so, the class sales leading Jeep Grand Cherokee is outselling the Journey more than 2 to 1.

Alluringly Low Prices: With a base price of $23,645, about $7,200 below the class average, the Journey looks like a steal. However, keep in mind that desirable features like Bluetooth, satellite radio, and voice commands do not come standard on the Journey like they do with many competitors. A top-trim Journey equipped with all-wheel drive ($35,295) is also around $12,600 cheaper than most fully-loaded competitors. However, you’ll miss out on several mainstream driver assistance features like blind spot monitoring, forward collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. Additionally, the Journey has one of the lowest reliability ratings in the class, meaning you may end up paying more for repairs and maintenance than you would with many competitors like the Ford Explorer and the Chevrolet Traverse, which is also the winner of the 2019 Best 3-Row SUV for Families award. Both the Explorer and Traverse have a better reliability ratings.

Time to Buy: While the Journey's pricing may be attractive to shoppers on a tight budget, this midsize SUV has too low a ranking for us to recommend it. For just a bit more money, you can get the well-ranked Kia Sorento. The Sorento was named our 2019 Best 3-Row SUV for the Money, meaning it has the best combination of quality and value in the class, so you need not worry about buyer's remorse. This month's Kia deals and Dodge deals can help you make a decision as well.
