Buying Advice

Last Updated: October 16, 2020

Very Low Demand: The Dodge Journey currently sits near the bottom of the competitive midsize SUV sales rankings. Dealerships have sold 50.7 percent fewer Journeys in 2020 relative to the same period in 2019. To make matters worse, the class sales-leading Ford Explorer is outselling the Journey by over 5 to 1.

Alluringly Low Prices: With a base price of $23,675, about $7,800 below the class average, the Journey looks like a steal. However, keep in mind that desirable features like Bluetooth, satellite radio, and voice commands do not come standard on the Journey like they do with many competitors. A top-trim Journey ($28,595) is the most affordable fully-loaded model in the class, and is about $18,100 less than the segment average for comparable trims. However, you’ll still miss out on several mainstream driver assistance features like blind spot monitoring, forward collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. Additionally, the Journey has one of the lowest reliability ratings in the class, meaning you may end up paying more for repairs and maintenance than you would with many competitors like the Hyundai Santa Fe and the Journey’s sibling, the Dodge Durango. Both the Santa Fe and Durango have better reliability ratings.

Time to Buy: While the Journey's pricing and low sales may be attractive to shoppers on a tight budget, this midsize SUV has too low a ranking for us to recommend it. For just a bit more money, you can get the well-ranked Kia Sorento. The Sorento was named our 2020 Best 3-Row SUV for the Money, meaning it has the best combination of quality and value in the class, so you don’t need to worry about buyer's remorse.  When you’re ready to buy, use the U.S. News Best Price Program to find the dealership in your area with the lowest price. Many dealerships are offering remote buying services to combat the spread of COVID-19. Contact your local dealer directly for details.
