2017 Dodge Journey Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2017 Dodge Journey was new.

Scorecard

Interior: 7.9

The 2017 Dodge Journey’s interior features quality materials and a stylish design, and the quality belies its low price. The seats are comfortable, though the optional third row is best left for smaller passengers. The infotainment system is one of the best on the market and is incredibly easy to use.

  • "In place of the old Rubbermaid interior is a thoroughly improved cabin highlighted by a rich-looking soft-touch touch dashboard and Dodge's three-spoke corporate steering wheel.” -- Left Lane News
  • "The 2017 Journey's cabin provides generally pleasing materials and textures for the price, while the gauges and dashboard have a functional and contemporary design. In general, Dodge has done a nice job of keeping the Journey's innards up-to-date despite the vehicle's advanced age." -- Edmunds
  • "The materials are upscale in look and feel, and the dashboard manages to look sleek and dressy without compromising the Journey's gauge legibility or ergonomics." -- AutoTrader (2015)

Seating

The Journey comes standard with two rows and seating for five on cloth upholstery. A third row that increases capacity to seven is available as an option or standard in higher trims. Other optional seating features include premium cloth seats, leather-bolstered seats with cloth inserts, full leather seats, a six-way power driver’s seat, heated seats, a leather-wrapped shift knob and steering wheel, and a heated steering wheel.

There are two complete and one partial LATCH system in the Journey, which are on the outboard and middle seats of the second row, respectively. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety rates the system as Marginal, which is the second-worst designation. On all three seats, the top tether anchor is hard to find and could be confused with other hardware. The middle seat borrows one lower anchor from the passenger side seat, and it’s difficult to maneuver around the anchors. On the second row driver’s side seat, the lower anchors are too deep in the seat cushion. There are optional integrated child booster seats available for the second row that are easier to manipulate than the standard LATCH tethers and anchors.

The Journey’s front seats provide a good amount of comfort and support for long drives. The second-row seats are also comfortable and have decent legroom. Passenger space in the third row is marginal and better suited to smaller adults or children.

  • "You'll find a fair amount of legroom behind the front seats, and the optional integrated child booster seats are a nice bonus. Furthering the family-oriented mission is the Journey's widely available third-row seat, which is bundled with a separate rear air-conditioner. This seat is far from adult-friendly, but it's handy if you need to shuttle a couple extra kids to soccer practice." -- Edmunds
  • Journey seats five occupants comfortably, while the third row is useful for carrying children and small adults on short....erm, journeys." -- Left Lane News
  • "We like the Journey's upright seating position and found the front seats to be remarkably supportive and comfortable, even after driving long distances." -- Kelley Blue Book (2016)

Interior Features

Standard features include a USB port, an infotainment system with a 4.3-inch touch screen, a six-speaker audio system, proximity key entry, and push-button ignition. Optional features include tri-zone automatic climate control, satellite radio, Bluetooth with voice command activation, an 8.4-inch infotainment touch screen, a six-speaker Alpine premium sound system with subwoofer, a DVD player with a 9-inch screen, navigation, rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, remote start, a 115-volt power outlet, a security alarm, and a universal garage door opener.

The Dodge Uconnect infotainment system earns strong acclaim for its ease of use. Its display screen is sharp and easy to read, and menus are intuitive and easy to navigate. Other controls, for functions like audio or climate, are also easy to find and use.

  • "Moreover, the available Uconnect 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment interface is one of the best in the business, thanks to large, easily readable typefaces and icons and sensible menus. Few systems are more straightforward to use or pleasing to the eye." -- Edmunds
  • "One of the best features of the Journey is its available Uconnect infotainment system. In addition to a large and easy-to-use 8.4-inch touch screen centered in the dash, there are supplementary buttons for climate and audio that are simple to see and use." -- Kelley Blue Book (2016)
  • "The standard 4.3-in touchscreen is unusual in a sub-$20,000 automobile, reminding us of Volkswagen's standard touchscreen stereos -- a premium touch. But the big technology news in the Journey is the 8.4-in touchscreen (optional on the SXT model and standard on the Limited and R/T models), which brings iPad-like crispness and ease of use into your driving experience. It's one of the best infotainment interfaces on the market, and it even includes an SD-card interface to give you more options in portable media. We highly recommend it." -- AutoTrader (2015)

Cargo

The Journey offers 10.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, 37 feet with the third row folded (39.6 in 2-row models), and 67.6 cubic feet maximum volume with all seats folded down. Those numbers are among the lowest in the class. Compartments under the seats and floor give additional storage space, and an optional folding front passenger seat allows for transport of exceptionally long items.

  • Lower all the seats and the Journey provides 67.6 cubic feet of total cargo capacity, which is an average capacity among small crossovers." -- Edmunds
  • "Dodge's Journey SUV for 2016 has numerous clever storage ideas. Not only does the rear seat fold flush, there are additional storage bins beneath the 2nd-row floor and front-passenger seat cushion. The same seat can fold flat to better accommodate long items such as a surfboard and skis." -- Kelley Blue Book (2016)
  • Cargo capacity behind the third row is just 10.7 cu ft., i.e., a few grocery bags' worth, but there are 39.6 cu ft. behind the second row and 67.6 cu ft. behind the first row. Those are competitive numbers for this type of vehicle." -- AutoTrader (2015)
