2013 Dodge Journey Performance Review

Note: This performance review was created when the 2013 Dodge Journey was new.

Performance: 7.0

The automotive press agrees that the 2013 Dodge Journey delivers a comfortable ride and decent handling, as well as ample power if you’re considering a V6 model. However, they also note that the base Journey is underpowered, and that its fuel economy estimates can’t match those of the most efficient SUVs in the class.

  • "Although the 2013 Dodge Journey might look as though it would ride and handle like a tall SUV, the feeling we experienced seemed more in keeping with a well-mannered wagon." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Much credit goes to the Pentastar V-6, as excellent here as in any other new Chrysler vehicle; it provides ample power while remaining quiet and smooth." -- Automobile Magazine (2012)
  • "So it's improved, although a Honda CR-V will feel more agile around town, while a Chevy Equinox will instill more confidence on the freeway." -- Edmunds (2012)

Acceleration and Power

The base Journey comes with a 173-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and a four-speed automatic transmission. A 283-horsepower, 3.6-liter V6 and a six-speed automatic transmission are available on higher trims. The EPA reports that the 2013 Journey gets up to 19/26 mpg city/highway, which is a bit low for the class. Rivals like the GMC Terrain, Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-5 all earn significantly better estimates.

Reviewers agree that the Journey has plenty of power when equipped with a V6. However, one reviewer says that despite the engine’s power, the six-speed automatic transmission doesn't always shift as smoothly as he would like. The four-cylinder Journey is deemed considerably less impressive by test drivers. They say that four-cylinder models are underpowered and also fail to deliver fuel economy estimates that are competitive within the segment.

  • "Only AWD Journeys have been made available for testing. These models only come with the V6 engine, which has more than ample power in any driving situation. It's a good match to the 6-speed automatic transmission, which is quick to summon more power when needed." -- Consumer Guide
  • "The standard 4-cylinder engine contributes to the Journey's low base price, but in that form it's noisy and underpowered." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Acceleration is brisk, thanks to the 3.6-liter V-6, but the transmission - which occasionally delivered a surprisingly harsh gear change - could stand a bit more refinement." -- Automobile Magazine (2012)
  • "The four-cylinder engine found in the base 2012 Dodge Journey SE just doesn't have enough power to get this heavy crossover moving. It also doesn't provide the fuel economy to justify its dawdling pace." -- Edmunds (2012)

Handling and Braking

While no reviewers describe the 2013 Journey as nimble, most agree that it offers composed handling and a fairly comfortable ride. One reviewer also notes that the Journey’s steering is accurate and well-weighted. If you need the best wet-weather traction that the Journey can offer, all-wheel drive is available on SXT, Crew and R/T trims.

  • "Journey's handling is not entirely car-like. We observe moderate body lean in fast corners, but the steering is responsive." -- Consumer Guide
  • "Dodge has given the Journey a very taut suspension that absorbs most road irregularities without complaint, yet is still stiff enough to keep the Journey from rolling and bobbing on windy roads." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Handling feels much more confident, and the ride, while not silky-smooth, is still quite good. The steering is now much more precise and predictable, with a light but still nicely weighted feel to it." -- Edmunds (2012)
