2019 Dodge Grand Caravan Interior Review

Interior: 6.1

The 2019 Grand Caravan draws mixed reviews for its interior quality. Low-grade plastics mix with soft-touch materials throughout the cabin, but overall, this vehicle generally prioritizes durability over luxury. The Grand Caravan shows its age with a dated infotainment display and a lack of available tech features. In comparison, many rivals offer a Wi-Fi hotspot or Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. The Grand Caravan’s second- and third-row seating can accommodate most adults in reasonable comfort. While this Dodge minivan doesn’t offer as much cargo space as many rivals, its Stow ’n Go seating system makes using that cargo space very easy.

  • "There's less attention to quality details in the Grand Caravan than all other minivans. Though some materials are acceptable, they're matched with large swaths of cheap plastic trim. We question the durability of the complex second-row seats." -- Edmunds
  • "The dashboard sports a much simpler and more elegant layout, while strategically placed soft-touch materials create an upscale feel." -- Left Lane News (2016)
  • "The overall cabin design is contemporary, with materials that err on the side of durability versus luxury." -- Consumer Guide (2013)

There is seating for seven people in the Grand Caravan. Cloth upholstery, a second-row bench seat, and third-row Stow ’n Go seats are all standard. Heated and power-adjustable front seats; leather upholstery; and a leather-wrapped, heated steering wheel are available. Second-row Stow 'n Go seats are also available.

Head- and legroom are good in all three rows. Most adults have enough space to sit in the back for short trips. However, the second-row Stow 'n Go seats are not well padded and may feel uncomfortable after a while. There are two complete sets of LATCH car-seat connections in the second-row seats and an additional complete set in the third-row middle seat.

  • "The Grand Caravan uses its space very well. From front-seat headroom to third-row legroom, there's ample space everywhere." -- Edmunds
  • The 2nd-row seats are roomy and supportive, if mounted a bit low, so adults ride in a slight knees-up position. The 3rd-row bench can accommodate 2 passengers comfortably. With the Stow 'n Go system, 2nd-row seat padding is not as robust as it is on rival vans, but it's not much of a comfort penalty." -- Consumer Guide (2013)
  • "And the slant and padding of the second-row seats made them uncomfortable. Kids didn't seem to mind, though." -- USA Today (2011)

Interior Features

Dodge offers the 2019 Grand Caravan in three trim levels. The standard features list is rather short, including tri-zone manual climate control, remote keyless entry, a six-speaker stereo, and a 6.5-inch touch screen. A few more features are available, such as a navigation system, satellite radio, Bluetooth, USB input, voice controls, tri-zone automatic climate control, and a rear-seat entertainment system. Notably, several tech features that you can find in other minivans aren’t even available in this Dodge, including a Wi-Fi hotspot, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and wireless device charging.

A rearview camera is the Grand Caravan’s only standard active safety feature, aside from the basics such as airbags and electronic stability control. Rear parking sensors are available. Most minivans offer more driver assistance technology, including things like forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, or a surround-view parking camera.

The Grand Caravan’s Uconnect infotainment system looks and feels dated compared to rivals. It has a noticeable lag time when responding to inputs, and the graphics are small.

  • "The base technology in ... the Grand Caravan is well below segment standards. And even on the top trim levels, the Grand Caravan is missing much of the high-tech equipment we expect from minivans these days. Poor and out-of-date." -- Edmunds
  • "The 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan's ace in the hole is its remarkably low starting price. Even in its most basic form, the Grand Caravan still comes nicely equipped, giving families on a budget a break where it counts most." -- Kelley Blue Book (2016)
  • Grand Caravan's dashboard features large, easy-to-read gauges. Most controls are logically arranged. When equipped with Chrysler's Uconnect multimedia suite, a few audio functions become a bit more complicated than they should be." -- Consumer Guide (2013)

The Grand Caravan has 31.1 cubic feet of space behind the third-row seats, 78.9 cubic feet behind the second row, and a maximum of 140.3 cubic feet behind the front seats. That’s a tremendous amount of cargo space, though many rivals offer even more. Still, the Grand Caravan’s Stow ’n Go seats make accessing that space a breeze. Unlike in competitors where you have to physically remove the seats to utilize all the cargo space, the Stow ’n Go seats simply fold down into the floor. Some models also feature a power liftgate.

  • "The Stow 'n Go second-row seats are segment-leading in terms of versatility. Manual operation of the third row is a little busy but works well. And there's massive storage in the second-row floor if you don't need to stow the seats." -- Edmunds
  • "One of its aces is cargo flexibility, primarily due to the Stow 'n Go 2nd-row seats, which quickly fold into the floor to maximize cargo space without removing the heavy seats." -- Kelley Blue Book (2016)
  • "Numerous pockets, bins, and cubbies mean you can store small items to your heart's content." -- Consumer Guide (2013)
