2017 Dodge Grand Caravan Overview

Is the 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan a Good Used Minivan?

The 2017 Grand Caravan is a so-so minivan. It does have some very appealing qualities, like convenient Stow 'n Go seats that fold flat into the floor (eliminating the need to remove bulky seats when you need more cargo room) and a V6 engine that’s plenty powerful. However, the Grand Caravan has mixed crash test scores, and it doesn't come with some of the advanced safety features found in minivans like the Chrysler Pacifica. Refinement is also in short supply when it comes to cabin materials and ride quality.

How Much Does the 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan Cost to Own?

While the Grand Caravan may be one of the least expensive minivans you can buy, it isn't one of the cheapest to own. Over the course of five years, the Grand Caravan is estimated to cost around $25,700 to insure, fuel, maintain, and repair. In comparison, these expenses add up to about $24,200 for the 2017 Kia Sedona.

Is It Better to Buy a Used or New Grand Caravan?

The Grand Caravan saw no major changes for 2018. At $26,250, the starting price of a 2018 Dodge Grand Caravan is about $6,000 higher than the average price of a 2017 Grand Caravan. Unless you are really itching to order a customized 2018 Grand Caravan, you're better off buying used.

Which Model Year of the Dodge Grand Caravan Is Best?

The current Grand Caravan generation is getting long in the tooth. Dodge has made mostly minor revisions to the trim levels and features since the Grand Caravan’s introduction for the 2008 model year. For 2013, the previously standard second-row Stow 'n Go seats became optional. A rearview camera with a 6.5-inch touch screen became standard for 2017. In our rankings, the Grand Caravan's scores have remained largely unchanged between model years. You can likely save money by shopping for an older, nearly identical Grand Caravan.

Which Used Dodge Grand Caravan Model Is Right for Me?

The 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan comes in four trims, streamlined from six in the previous year. The base Grand Caravan SE is sparsely equipped. For families, we recommend starting with at least the SE Plus trim. In addition to the standard third-row Stow 'n Go seats, the Grand Caravan SE Plus gets these folding seats in the second row, making it a breeze to quickly change your interior to either haul cargo or hold extra passengers.

Opt for the Grand Caravan SXT if your budget allows. Its upscale interior is outfitted with leather seats, power-sliding rear doors, and a power liftgate. A tow package is available, but only in the range-topping Grand Caravan GT. Some GT models may also have advanced safety features like rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic alert.

What Does Dodge's Certified Pre-Owned Warranty Cover?

Dodge offers a certified pre-owned program for vehicles five years old or less and with fewer than 75,000 miles. Eligibility is determined by the vehicle’s initial sale date. For its certified pre-owned vehicles, Dodge extends the original new-car powertrain warranty to seven years from the original sale date or 100,000 miles. CPO vehicles also get a three-month/3,000-mile Maximum Coverage Care warranty. Additional benefits are available, including a 90-day SiriusXM satellite radio trial subscription, a CarFax vehicle history report, 24-hour towing and roadside assistance, and a car rental allowance. There are mileage and model restrictions, so read the Dodge warranty page carefully.

Dodge has one of the worst CPO warranties among affordable carmakers, according to our analysis. Kia, Hyundai, Chevy, Ford, Honda, and Mazda are all better.

How Safe Is the Grand Caravan?

The Grand Caravan does not have a very high safety score for a minivan. This is partly because of its mixed crash test results and partly because it doesn’t come with any frontal collision prevention systems, like automatic emergency braking. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the 2017 model four out of five stars overall. In individual categories, the NHTSA gave the Grand Caravan five stars in the side crash test and four stars in the frontal crash and rollover tests. The Grand Caravan received the highest rating of Good in four out of five Insurance Institute for Highway Safety simulations, but the lowest grade of Poor in the driver’s side small overlap front test.

The 2017 Grand Caravan comes standard with a rearview camera. Some Grand Caravan GT models may come with rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic alert.

2017 Dodge Grand Caravan Versus the Competition

Which Is Better: 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan or 2017 Chrysler Pacifica?

On average, the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica costs about $5,000 more than the Dodge Grand Caravan, but we think the investment is worth it. The Pacifica’s cabin is much more upscale, with a stylish design and quality materials. It also comes standard with features that are optional in the Grand Caravan, like an eight-way power driver’s seat, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, and the Uconnect infotainment system. Chrysler's minivan also has much higher crash test scores and is available with many more safety features. In fact, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named the 2017 Pacifica a Top Safety Pick+, the organization’s highest honor.

Which Is Better: 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan or 2017 Honda Odyssey?

The 2017 Honda Odyssey is a much better minivan than the Dodge Grand Caravan. It has higher safety and predicted reliability ratings, better fuel economy, and a larger interior. However, the Odyssey doesn’t offer as much value as the Grand Caravan. Both come with a similar level of standard features, but you'll spend almost $12,000 more on average with the Odyssey. Still, the Honda offers more extras, such as a built-in vacuum cleaner and advanced safety equipment. The Odyssey is the better option of the two, but only if it fits your budget.

2017 Grand Caravan Performance

How Does the 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan Drive?

You'll easily be able to get up to speed with the Grand Caravan’s 283-horsepower V6 engine and six-speed automatic transmission. The Grand Caravan’s handling isn't as capable, as it exhibits noticeable body roll and minimal agility. Its ride also isn't as smooth as that of most other minivans.

Does the 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan Get Good Gas Mileage?

The Grand Caravan returns 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway, which is one of the lowest fuel economy estimates in the class.

2017 Dodge Grand Caravan Towing Capacity

The Grand Caravan can tow up to 3,600 pounds when properly equipped.

How Many People Does the 2017 Grand Caravan Seat?

The Grand Caravan has room for seven people. There's no option for a middle seat in the second row (like the Honda Odyssey offers), but you can get the convenient Stow 'n Go seats for this section – a must for active households. The seat cushions are respectable – though not as comfortable as some – and the Grand Caravan offers more legroom in the third row than most of the competition.

How Many Car Seats Fit in the 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan?

The second-row seats and the third-row middle seat come with a full set of LATCH anchors to secure child safety seats. It takes some searching to dig most of the lower anchors out of the seat cushions, and the tether anchors are not in an obvious location. The LATCH anchors are otherwise user-friendly.

2017 Dodge Grand Caravan Features

Alongside its competition, the Grand Caravan seems a bit spartan inside. Its base infotainment system features a 6.5-inch touch screen, a six-speaker audio system, and a rearview camera. Some higher-level models may also include features like navigation, satellite radio, or a voice recognition system. The Grand Caravan’s infotainment system is straightforward. However, it can’t match the sharp graphics and advanced features of the Uconnect system found in other Dodge vehicles.
