2009 Dodge Grand Caravan Overview

The 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan suffers from many of the same pitfalls as its platform mate, the 2009 Chrysler Town & Country. An underpowered base engine, cheap interior materials and poor build quality keep the Grand Caravan from being at the top of the class. However, minivans are geared toward families, and some reviewers thought that the 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan was a great way for parents and their children to travel.

Despite the Grand Caravan’s shortcomings, many test drivers were pleased with the spacious interior and innovative seating arrangements. Reviewers felt that the high-end SXT trim was the only model that provided enough power to keep pace on the highway or carry a full load. While reviewers were satisfied with the higher trim’s power, many still thought that the Grand Caravan didn’t quite stack up against top competitors. The Grand Caravan received average safety scores for 2009 minivans.

Although reviewers liked the Grand Caravan’s interior space, they also found that the second- and third-row seats were better suited to children. The standard Stow ‘n Go and available Swivel ‘n Go seats offer different interior configurations. The Stow ‘n Go seats fold flat to create more cargo room, while the Swivel ‘n Go seats turn 180 degrees to face the third row. Notable standard features include cruise control and a four-speaker sound system with an auxiliary input. Optional features when it was new include satellite radio, a DVD entertainment system with flip-down LCD screens and a navigation system.

Other Cars to Consider

The 2009 Honda Odyssey should be considered for its strong build quality, smooth handling and comfortable interior. Even though the Odyssey’s interior may not be as customizable, it outmatched the Grand Caravan in performance, overall interior quality and safety when it was new. Many reviewers viewed the Odyssey as the benchmark for minivans, so if you want a more refined family vehicle, the Odyssey should be on your list.

The 2009 Kia Sedona offers a more powerful base engine than the Grand Caravan, as well as class-leading safety ratings and a nicer interior. Reviewers found the Sedona to be a great bargain with a list of useful standard features that include cruise control, a USB port and satellite radio. However, the Sedona lacks the configurable seating options you’ll find in the Grand Caravan.
