2016 Dodge Durango Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2016 Dodge Durango was new.

Scorecard

Interior: 8.2

Auto writers agree that the 2016 Dodge Durango's cabin has upscale materials and an eye-catching design. However, some point out that the segment has gotten very competitive in terms of interior quality, and several of the Durango's rivals have even nicer interiors. Some reviewers say the cabin is quiet, though others complain of wind noise. The Durango earns particular praise for its user-friendly Uconnect touch-screen infotainment system. Test drivers also praise the comfortable second-row seats. Some think the third row is adult-sized, but others think it's only large enough for children. Cargo space is about average for the class.

  • Materials quality is unremarkable for the segment, which says more about the segment itself, as there are plenty of soft-touch surfaces to be found and minimal cheap ones. It's just that other, newer competitors are nicer while having more compelling and visually interesting designs to boot. The mechanically related Jeep Grand Cherokee also has a plusher interior." -- Edmunds
  • "The interior of the 2015 Dodge Durango reflects luxury-car quality and craftsmanship, an update emphasizing comfort, premium materials, visual elegance and supreme quiet." --Kelley Blue Book (2015)
  • "Previously, the Durango's cabin was a functional space with generally unimpeachable materials, but it lacked the design flair to truly set it apart. That's no longer the case, with a sleek new steering wheel and a reconfigurable instrument panel doing wonders to spice things up." -- Left Lane News (2015)
  • "Niggles of the 2014 Durango are slight, but ever so present. There's a surprising amount of wind noise on the freeway." -- AutoWeek (2014)

Seating

The 2016 Dodge Durango seats up to seven and comes standard with cloth upholstery. Available features include leather upholstery, second-row captain’s chairs (which reduce seating capacity to six), heated, ventilated and power-adjustable front seats, a heated steering wheel and heated second-row seats.

Test drivers write that the second-row seats in the Durango are comfortable. They note that the third row is easy to access thanks to wide rear doors and flip-down second-row seats that provide a large passage. However, they disagree about how spacious and comfortable the third row is. Some say that it's spacious enough for adults to sit comfortably, but others think it's only large enough to comfortably seat children.

  • "In reality, the Durango offers more useful passenger space [than some competitors]. This is especially true in the third row where adults can actually sit comfortably, which is rare. The rear doors are also enormous and open to nearly 90 degrees, making for easier ingress and egress - aided further by a flip-and-fold second-row seat." -- Edmunds
  • Also, while the Durango's third-row seat is handy, it's far from the roomiest you'll find." -- AutoTrader (2015)
  • The 2nd row is quite roomy and comfortable. Standard seat heaters on all but the SXT are a comfort plus. The split bench folds and tumbles forward with one-touch motion to provide a surprisingly generous passage to the 3rd row. It does not slide fore or aft, however. The rearmost seat can accommodate two small-to-average-size adults in a pinch, but they will ride slightly knees up. As such, we recommend the 3rd row be used for kids only." -- Consumer Guide (2013)
  • "The legroom in both rows was plentiful. I could sit comfortably in the third row." -- Mother Proof (2013)

Interior Features

Standard features in the 2016 Durango include tri-zone automatic climate control, a six-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, a USB port and the Uconnect infotainment system with a 5-inch touch screen. Available features include a rearview camera, navigation, a 10-speaker Beats audio system, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, rear parking sensors, forward collision warning, rear cross traffic alert, remote start, a dual-screen rear-seat Blu-ray entertainment system and the Uconnect system with an 8.4-inch touch screen.

Critics say that both the 5- and 8.4-inch Uconnect touch-screen infotainment systems are easy-to-use. They like that both systems have traditional buttons and knobs in addition to the touch screen. The 8.4-inch system is especially good, they say, with some noting that it's one of the best infotainment systems on the market. They also appreciate the useful features the systems provide, such as Yelp, which can help you find ratings of local businesses.

  • "However, the Durango has a leg up on most competitors when it comes to tech interfaces. The standard system is user-friendly, but we highly recommend the superior Uconnect 8.4 system that boasts large virtual buttons, logical menus and helpful secondary physical controls. Whether tech-savvy or tech-averse, it's one of the best systems out there." -- Edmunds
  • "Bringing extra capability and a more modern appearance to the center stack is Chrysler's user-friendly Uconnect Access infotainment system, which is available with either a 5.0- or 8.4-inch touchscreen and accompanied by redesigned redundant controls." -- Left Lane News (2015)
  • "That [Uconnect] system is in the Durango, with the added feature of a Yelp app that is pretty handy for finding what you want wherever you are. Taxidermy in LA? Yeah, it told us where to go." -- Autoblog (2014)

Cargo

The 2016 Dodge Durango offers 17.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row of seats, 47.7 cubic feet behind the second row and 84.5 behind the first. The Durango’s cargo space is about average for the class as a whole, though rivals like the Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia have more.

  • With the second- and third-row seats folded down, the Durango can carry up to 84.5 cubic feet of cargo. This is a respectable amount, but competing large crossover SUVs like the Chevy Traverse and Mazda CX-9 offer considerably more cargo space." -- Edmunds (2014)
  • Cargo space is decent behind the 3rd row. Folding both rows of seat backs opens up a much larger area, though admittedly not as much as other big SUVs." -- Consumer Guide (2013)
