2010 Dodge Dakota Review

The 2010 Dodge Dakota distinguishes itself from other compact pickups with a higher towing capacity than most rivals, but its underpowered base engine and low-rent interior detract from its appeal.

Pros & Cons

  • High towing capacity
  • Cheap interior materials
  • Underwhelming base V6

2010 Dodge Dakota Overview

Unlike some trucks in the class, the 2010 Dakota did not offer a four-cylinder engine. Instead, it comes with a standard V6 or an available V8. For the most part, reviewers described the V6’s power as poor or adequate, and most said the V8 is the way to go for serious towing and hauling. Most critics found the Dakota’s ride and handling acceptable, though some noted that the Dakota is prone to body roll and harshness over bumps. A V6 Dakota averages 15/20 mpg city/highway, which is about average among V6-powered compact pickups. A properly-equipped Dakota can tow up to 7,250 pounds, which is one of the highest ratings in the class.

The Dakota is available in a four- or five-seat extended cab configuration, as well as a five- or six-seat crew cab body style. One critic noted that extended cab models don’t have much legroom, and most acknowledged the crew cab as the more passenger-friendly choice. Some reviewers found the front seats comfortable, while others weren’t impressed, with one reviewer who noted lumbar settings that couldn’t be dialed back as much as he would’ve liked. They also appreciated the crew cab’s available rear cargo storage system called Crate N Go, which is made up of collapsible bins located under the back seat to help keep smaller cargo items organized. More than one reviewer thought the interior needs more high-quality materials, and that there are too many cheap plastics surfaces. The Dakota comes with a single CD stereo, while an Alpine stereo with a CD changer, heated front seats, leather seats, navigation and satellite radio are available.

Other Trucks to Consider

Reviewers said that the 2010 Nissan Frontier has a civilized ride and impressive off-road ability, as well as an available V6 engine that has plenty of power.

The 2010 Honda Ridgeline was praised by critics for its comfortable ride and all-around easy drivability. Although it can’t tow as much as the Dakota, reviewers appreciated the Ridgeline’s innovative lockable in-bed trunk and tailgate, which folds down or swings open to the side.
