Which Model Year of the Dodge Charger Is Best?

The 2017 Dodge Charger is part of a generation that launched for the 2011 model year. The 2015 Charger received a significant refresh to its interior and exterior styling, along with a standard eight-speed automatic transmission, several advanced safety features, and some new trims (including the SRT Hellcat). The 2016 Charger was essentially unchanged, and for 2017, Dodge upgraded the available infotainment system and added Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

You'll want to stick to a 2017 Charger if having some of the latest tech is important to you. Two new Dodge Charger Daytona models also debuted for 2017. Average prices for the 2015 through 2017 Chargers differ by a few thousand dollars. You might also consider a 2013 Charger or 2014 Charger to save even more cash, but you won’t get any of the benefits from the 2015 refresh.

2017 Dodge Charger Recalls

At the time of this writing, four open recalls apply to the 2017 Dodge Charger. The cruise control may short out, increasing the risk of a crash. Engine oil cooler lines can fail and spray oil on the windshield or the engine, increasing the risk of fire or a crash. Two recalls affect the front driveshaft. Bolts can loosen and cause the driveshaft to disconnect, and the front driveshaft universal joint can fracture and cause the shaft to separate from the car. Be sure a Dodge dealer has addressed these issues before buying a used 2017 Charger.

Which Used Dodge Charger Model Is Right for Me?

The 2017 Dodge Charger is available in eight trim levels: SE, SXT, R/T, Daytona, R/T Scat Pack, Daytona 392, SRT 392, and SRT Hellcat.

If you're looking for classic muscle-inspired performance, focus your search on R/T models and above. These have Hemi V8 engines of various displacements and power, and all have more than enough power.

The SE and SXT models are on the other end of the spectrum. These are the only Chargers you can get with all-wheel drive, but skip the bares-bone SE. It has only a few standard features and next to no available features. The SXT comes standard with heated front seats, an 8.4-inch touch screen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and satellite radio. You can find certain SXT Chargers with leather seats, navigation, and lots of driver assistance features.

What Does Dodge's Certified Pre-Owned Warranty Cover?

Dodge offers a certified pre-owned program for vehicles five years old or less and with fewer than 75,000 miles. Eligibility is determined by the vehicle’s initial sale date. For its certified pre-owned vehicles, Dodge extends the original new-car powertrain warranty to seven years from the original sale date or 100,000 miles. CPO vehicles also get a three-month/3,000-mile Maximum Coverage Care warranty. Additional benefits are available, including a 90-day SiriusXM satellite radio trial subscription, a CarFax vehicle history report, 24-hour towing and roadside assistance, and a car rental allowance. There are mileage and model restrictions, so read the Dodge warranty page carefully.

The 2017 Dodge Charger has good safety scores, but many class rivals score higher. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the Charger an overall rating of five out of five stars. It also received five stars in the side crash and rollover tests and four stars in the frontal crash test. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the Charger the top rating of Good in four crash tests. However, the car earned the second-lowest rating of Marginal in the small overlap front test.

The 2017 Chevrolet Impala is not only a more practical choice than the Charger, but it’s also a better car overall. The Chevy has better safety and predicted reliability ratings, much lower ownership costs, and lower list prices. These cars are pretty close in overall performance, but for different reasons. The Charger has monstrous engine options and athletic handling, while the Impala prioritizes a balanced ride. The Impala offers a nicer interior than the Charger, with more rear-seat headroom and a bigger trunk. Unless you're set on buying one of the high-performance Charger trims, you're better off saving money and going with the Impala.

Which Is Better: 2017 Dodge Charger or 2017 Chrysler 300?

The 2017 Chrysler 300 ranks only marginally higher than the Charger. Both cars have low safety scores for the class and unimpressive predicted reliability. How Does the 2017 Dodge Charger Drive?

The 2017 Dodge Charger has four potent engines. SE and SXT models feature a 292-horsepower 3.6-liter V6. It's well-suited to hurrying the Charger around town, and you should have no problem getting up to highway speeds or accelerating when carrying a car full of people. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and the V6 is the only Charger powertrain that you can find with all-wheel drive.

There are three voracious Hemi V8 engines as well. R/T and Daytona models come with a 370-horsepower 5.7-liter engine. R/T Scat Pack, Daytona 392, and SRT 392 Chargers feature a 485-horsepower 6.4-liter V8. Straight from the bowels of the underworld is the supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi found in the 707-horsepower SRT Hellcat.

It's not just muscle under the hood that makes the Charger one of the most fun-to-drive large sedans. It also boasts athletic handling through turns, with little body roll and precise steering. The ride remains comfortable over rough surfaces.

Does the 2017 Dodge Charger Get Good Gas Mileage?

With its standard V6 engine, the 2017 Charger gets an EPA-estimated 19 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. Those numbers are competitive with other V6-powered large sedans. V6 AWD models drop to 18/27 mpg city/highway.

The 5.7-liter V8 gets 16/25 mpg, while the 6.4-liter V8 returns 15/25 mpg. The 6.2-liter supercharged V8 found in the Charger Hellcat gets 13/22 mpg.

The Dodge Charger seats five people. Cloth upholstery and a six-way power-adjustable driver's seat are standard. Available amenities include leather and suede upholstery, Nappa leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, 12-way power-adjustable front seats, heated front and rear seats, and ventilated front seats.

The front seats are comfortable and provide lots of support for long drives. The cabin also feels open and airy around the driver and passenger. The second row is wide enough to fit three people easily, and there's plenty of legroom. However, taller passengers may feel a little short on headroom. Thick rear window pillars also hamper outward visibility.

How Many Car Seats Fit in the 2017 Dodge Charger?

The Charger has three complete rear-seat LATCH connections, which is uncommon for a sedan. However, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the second-lowest rating of Marginal for overall ease of use. The larger Uconnect touch-screen system was updated for 2017 to include smartphone integration, and its overall operation is a lot better too. Critics praise it for its intuitiveness and large virtual buttons.
