2014 Dodge Avenger Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2014 Dodge Avenger was new.

Interior: 6.6

While some test drivers say the Dodge Avenger’s cabin has a modern design and is improved over previous model years, others write that it’s still characterized by hard plastic surfaces that give it a decidedly low-budget feel. Reviews of the seats range from adequately comfy to cringe-worthy. Most reviewers agree that the cabin isn’t very roomy, especially for rear passengers, saying that rival midsize cars offer more space. The trunk is also small for the class. Auto writers say the Avenger’s gauges are easy to read and the optional infotainment system is intuitive to use and provides a lot of useful information via a large touch screen. Still, a few reviewers say the Avenger lacks features that are available on other sedans, like a rearview camera.

  • "Originally launched for the 2008 model year, the Avenger received a thorough update for 2011 that brought a more refined interior, a potent Pentastar V6 and a re-tuned suspension. These changes gave the Avenger a competitive cabin with a generous helping of upscale soft-touch materials, plenty of standard features and a simple, pleasing design." -- Left Lane News
  • "The cabin boasts a modern design with quality materials, but it is not very spacious and rear visibility is poor." -- Consumer Guide (2013)
  • "It didn't take long to notice that hollow, chintzy feeling inside the Avenger. There is nothing plush about it: From the plastic dash to the interior door panels to the dollar-store-special steering wheel, everything inside of our Avenger SE felt cheap." -- AutoWeek (2013)
  • "Much of the Avenger's hard plastic interior trim was eliminated with the 2011 revisions, which included a reskinned dashboard and nicer touch points on the doors. That said, some rudimentary elements remain, like cheap airplane-style map lights and a wobbly turn-signal stalk.” -- Cars.com (2013)

The Avenger comes with bucket seats, a manually-adjustable driver seat with lumbar support and a tilt and telescoping steering wheel. Optional upgrades include leather-trimmed seats, heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver seat and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. Reviews of the front seats range from adequate to quite uncomfortable, with some saying they aren’t very supportive. Most test drivers agree that the cabin is cramped, especially for rear passengers, adding that rival sedans offer noticeably more room.

  • "There's noticeably less space for rear-seat passengers than other mid-size sedans. …" -- Left Lane News
  • “Up front, the seats are comfortable, though the seating position feels a bit on the high side, a trick designers used to gain a little more legroom. The backseat is a tad cramped, a byproduct of the Avenger's compact overall dimensions." -- Edmunds (2013)
  • "Some of our editors found the fabric-covered seating comfortable and appreciated the power adjustments, definitely a nice touch for the price. But the lack of support these seats provided had others among us literally aching to get out of the car." -- AutoWeek (2013)
  • “Avenger's midsize rivals tend to have more space in the rear seat. In fact, overall room isn't much better than some compact cars. The back-seat area seems smaller than it actually is, largely due to the narrow cabin and lack of rear-quarter windows." -- Consumer Guide (2013)

Interior Features

The 2014 Dodge Avenger comes standard with a four-speaker CD audio system, an auxiliary input and steering wheel-mounted audio controls. Optional features include satellite radio, Bluetooth phone and audio streaming, navigation, a USB port and a six-speaker Boston Acoustics audio system. An available Uconnect voice command infotainment system includes a 6.5-inch touch screen, a hard drive for media storage and a DVD player. Additional options include automatic climate control, heated side mirrors and a sunroof.

Test drivers find that the gauges are large and easy to read. They especially like the optional infotainment system that has a large screen and responds quickly to inputs. However, some reviewers comment that features available on rival cars, including a rearview camera, are absent from the Avenger.

  • "… expected technology features like Chrysler's latest uConnect infotainment system and a rearview camera are nowhere to be found." -- Left Lane News
  • "The gauges are big and simple to interpret. The audio system and its accompanying touchscreen, part of Chrysler's Uconnect infotainment system, is easy to negotiate." -- Consumer Guide (2013)
  • "While we're on the subject of electronic bells and whistles, newly commonplace technology like a rearview camera and rear parking sensors aren't even offered as options here, a definite negative in a car with thick, rear roof pillars that hamper visibility." -- Edmunds (2013)
  • "This optional [Uconnect] system features a large color touch-screen that acts as the command center for audio, navigation and for retrieval of real-time info such as weather forecasts and movie times. We appreciate the system's prompt response to touch." -- Kelley Blue Book (2013)

The 2014 Dodge Avenger’s trunk has 13.5 cubic feet of cargo space, which is smaller than most other midsize sedans’ trunks. The Hyundai Sonata, by comparison, has 16.4 cubic feet of cargo space. One auto writer notes that the front passenger seat and rear seats fold flat for added cargo space.

  • "The trunk is likewise on the small side with just 13.4 cubic feet of cargo room, though the Avenger does have a fold-flat front passenger seat and 60/40 split-folding rear seatbacks." -- Edmunds (2013)
