2012 Buick Verano Unveiled

Posted: January 6, 2011

The Detroit Auto begins next week, but Buick decided to reveal the Verano – the automaker's new compact – a little early.

Inside Line gives the rundown: “GM said the Verano — an upscale companion to the Chevrolet Cruze — will get a standard 177-horsepower 2.4-liter engine when it debuts late next year. The automaker also uses the 2.4-liter engine on such mainstays as the Chevrolet Malibu. A 2.0-liter turbo engine will be offered on Verano in the future, it said, but gave no technical specifications. Buick claims the standard engine in the Verano gets the car from zero to 60 mph in 8.0 seconds. The EPA has yet to rate the Verano, but the sedan is expected to return an estimated 31 mpg on the highway.”

Like the Regal, the Verano has an expensive look. “Buick's design language is nicely carried over to the new small sedan, with the front fascia also looking a bit more like the larger LaCrosse sedan,” writes Autoblog. “The upward sloping lower character line on the sides are very similar to what we're used to on the Regal, but perhaps the most interesting design cue are the taillamps. Stare at an image of the Verano's rump for a few moments, imagine it without the silvery garnishes, and things still look mighty fine to us.” To get up close, check out our slide show of the 2012 Verano.

GM says that the Verano is “the latest model in a product renaissance that began with the Enclave and continued with the LaCrosse and Regal. Like them, Verano is distinguished by luxury and technology, including 10 standard air bags, an available heated steering wheel and a next-generation radio system with OnStar-powered connectivity that enables seamless communication between the Verano and the driver’s smart phone.”

Slotted just below the well-reviewed Buick Regal, the Verano is a good alternative for shoppers looking for luxury with a cheaper price tag. The Verano will be priced between $21,000 and $26,000, and hits the market in the fourth quarter of 2011.
