Toyota Rav4, Powered by Tesla

Posted: November 11, 2010

In preparation for the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show, automakers are starting to tease vehicles that will be displayed on their stands. The latest car to hop on the electric slide is the Toyota Rav4, which will feature components powered by Tesla.

Although a Toyota-issued press release doesn’t mention this, a couple of teaser photographs provided to the media confirm this. Its instrument cluster reads, “RAV4 powered by Tesla.”

Toyota’s teaser shots “[s]howed off its nameplate badge and ‘EV’ emblem and a speedometer with an LED readout promoting the Tesla-Toyota relationship prominently,” writes KickingTires.

Though many buyers may believe this is the first-generation Rav4, Edmunds points out that “[t]his is actually the second-generation RAV4 EV. Toyota previously created an electric version of the RAV4 for the lease market and then for sale but discontinued it in early 2003,” since not many were sold.

Car and Driver reports that “The companies still plan to have a production model ready for consumers by 2012.”

If you’re looking at buying a compact SUV that gets good gas mileage, it may be best to hold off and wait for the Tesla-powered Rav4. Can’t hold off until 2012? Then your best bets are the Chevrolet Equinox and the standard-issue Toyota Rav4 as both vehicles have excellent fuel economy for the compact SUV class.
