Scorecard

Performance: 7.3

The 2016 Chrysler Town & Country impresses a few reviewers with its strong V6 engine, smooth ride and tight steering. However, others say it has a rough ride over broken pavement, numb steering and its powertrain is starting to feel outdated.

  • "The 2016 Chrysler Town & Country's 3.6-liter V6 engine generates satisfying acceleration for most situations, while handling is stable and sure." -- Edmunds
  • "Despite its aging platform, Chrysler's 2016 Town & Country minivan can still hold its own against newer minivans." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • Though a dated platform means its driving manners aren't as refined as those of some competitors, the Town & Country does feature class-leading power courtesy of a gutsy Pentastar V6." -- Left Lane News (2015)

Acceleration and Power

A 283-horsepower, 3.6-liter V6 engine comes standard in the 2016 Chrysler Town & Country and it's mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. According to the EPA, the Town & Country gets 17/25 mpg city/highway, which is a little low for the class.

The V6 engine generates ample power even when the van is loaded with passengers, test drivers write. However, a few note it can be noisy and doesn’t deliver the same punch as the engines in some competitors. They add the transmission occasionally doesn’t shift precisely, but some say it shifts much quicker in manual mode.

  • "It's the T&C's overall refinement that runs behind the smoother Japanese competition. There is more ruckus from the V6, and its automatic transmission doesn't always shift as smoothly as we'd like." -- Edmunds
  • "Of course, the heart and soul of this family caravan is the award-winning 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine. With power to spare, this engine makes even a fully loaded Town & Country feel sprightly. …" -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The Town & Country has plenty of power under the hood and delivers quick manual shifts with the automatic's shifter in AutoStick mode. We love the hushed, smooth highway ride, as well. Full loads rarely present a problem. …" -- AutoTrader (2015)
  • This minivan accelerates smoothly, if not as sprightly as its 283-horsepower rating would suggest. The transmission upshifts smoothly. Some downshifts require a somewhat deep pressing of the gas pedal." -- Consumer Guide (2013)

Handling and Braking

Some auto journalists say the 2016 Chrysler Town & Country has a harsh ride over rough pavement, though others say it rides comfortably. Some reviewers say the van has accurate steering feel, making it more maneuverable than some rivals. Others say the steering feels numb and they add there is moderate body roll around corners. The brakes feel well-weighted, some critics report, but add that when pressed hard the Town & Country nosedives significantly.

  • "We are big fans of the Town &Country's suspension tuning, which provides minimal body roll yet returns a remarkably smooth ride. The steering feel is also taut and precise." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The van's ride quality can also get more unsettled when driving over larger bumps as compared to rivals like the Odyssey or Sienna." -- Edmunds
  • "Anyone who expects that minivans are nothing more than porky, tippy kid shuttles will be pleasantly surprised with the Town & Country's handling, as well as its excellent body control and crisp steering. The solid handling gives the Town & Country a sense of maneuverability that's absent from some vans. The S model gets even better thanks to its retuned suspension." -- AutoTrader (2015)
  • "The steering is deceptively light on center, but road feel increases substantially the more you turn the wheel. Body lean is rather noticeable, even when cornering at moderate speeds. The brakes have good pedal feel, but simulated panic stops resulted in considerable nosedive." -- Consumer Guide (2013)
