2021 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Performance

U.S. News Best Price Program

2021 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Performance Review

Performance: 7.9

The 2021 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is a fuel-efficient plug-in-hybrid minivan. It has a well-mannered ride with balanced handling, a decent all-electric driving range, and a powertrain that’s peppy around town and sufficient on the freeway.

  • "We highly recommend trying out the plug-in hybrid model. Besides saving fuel, the added weight from its battery further improves the handling, settles the ride and smooths out acceleration." -- Autotrader
  • "You get the bonus of quiet all-electric operation at low speeds, though the Hybrid's V6 engine can be noisy when it's running." -- Edmunds (2019)
  • "On the Interstate it is capable of easy, quiet cruising." -- Consumer Guide (2019)

Engine Options, Horsepower, and Acceleration

  • Powertrain: 3.6-liter V6 engine and two electric motors with a combined 260 horsepower
  • Drivetrain: front-wheel drive
  • Transmission: continuously variable automatic (CVT)

On paper, the Pacifica Hybrid makes less horsepower than its nonhybrid counterpart. However, its electric motors still help it feel zippy from a stop. Accelerating from zero to 60 mph takes around 7.8 seconds, which is about what you’d expect from a minivan. The CVT operates seamlessly. Also seamless are the transitions between gas and electric power.

  • "The wonderfully competent continuously variable transmission (CVT) in the 2021 Pacifica Hybrid is even smoother. The whole drivetrain is excellent, providing a linear punch even when the EV range is depleted and almost imperceptible transitions between the gasoline engine and the electric motor." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "There's only a total of 260 horsepower, and the Hybrid weighs more than a regular Pacifica. Even so, acceleration from a stop is brisk thanks to the electric motor's added low-end torque output." -- Edmunds (2019)
  • "The transmission is an 'electrically variable' unit without the feel of stepped gears. The 3.6 doesn’t kick in until a concerted need for power arises, and the Hybrid doesn’t have quite the off-the-line zip of its all-gas brethren—though it generates enough instant torque to spin the front tires on damp pavement." -- Consumer Guide (2019)

MPG Estimates

As of this writing, the EPA has not evaluated the 2021 Pacifica Hybrid’s fuel economy. However, the mechanically identical 2020 model gets a combined city/highway rating of 82 MPG-equivalent (30 mpg with the battery depleted), with an electric-only range of 32 miles. Those are great figures for a minivan. Using a 240-volt charger, you can recharge the battery pack in about two hours.

Handling and Braking

The Pacifica Hybrid is reasonably composed for a van, with controlled body lean, but where it truly excels is comfort. Bumps and dips in the road pose little problem. However, steering is a bit numb, and the regenerative brakes can take some getting used to, particularly if you aren’t familiar with driving hybrids.

  • "The Pacifica delivers the kind of ride minivan drivers expect: quiet, powerful enough, and one without unpleasant surprises." -- Kelley Blue Book (2020)
  • "It handles easily (even if the steering is somewhat numb) and rides smoothly on most surfaces. The Hybrid’s braking suffers a bit from the same lack of initial feel at the pedal that plagues so many electrified vehicles with regenerative energy capture." -- Consumer Guide (2019)
  • "Considering the Pacifica Hybrid's substantial weight, handling is fine as long as you don't do your best Mario Andretti impression. Body roll is kept in check, and it makes it around corners well, even if the steering doesn't feel all that precise. Midcorner bumps are dispatched with few issues." -- Edmunds (2019)
