Is the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid a Good Minivan?

The Pacifica Hybrid is a great, family-friendly minivan, and there's plenty to like about it. Its cabin features quality materials, intuitive tech features, and – perhaps most importantly – comfortable seats for every passenger. It has good handling for a minivan, and it gets great fuel economy, which probably isn’t shocking for a hybrid. Although it has less cargo space than most minivans, its roughly 140 cubic feet of space is nothing to scoff at.

Which Is Better: Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid or Chrysler Pacifica?

As you might expect, the Pacifica Hybrid and the gas-only Chrysler Pacifica are very similar. They're comparable in terms of features, interior quality, passenger space, and performance, though the hybrid gets better gas mileage. The gas-only model has a leg up with its Stow 'n Go second-row seats, which easily fold flat into the floor to maximize cargo capacity. The hybrid model doesn't have them, as the battery packs take up space in the floor where the seats would fold into. The gas-only Pacifica's much lower base price is appealing. But in the end, the Pacifica Hybrid won’t cost you much more. Assuming you qualify for the federal tax credit available on plug-in hybrids, the Pacifica Hybrid will only cost you around $1,750 more than the gas-only model over the course of five years. If gas prices go up, that difference will become even smaller.

Which Is Better: Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid or Kia Sedona?

The Kia Sedona can't match the Pacifica Hybrid's fuel economy or ride quality, and its transmission isn't that smooth. While the Kia does provide more cargo space, the Chrysler comes with more standard features. The Sedona has a much lower base price, but the Pacifica Hybrid is worth the extra money for many buyers.

The Toyota Sienna comes with a V6 engine, but it isn't as smooth as the Pacifica Hybrid's powertrain. The Sienna offers more cargo room, and it's the only minivan available with all-wheel drive. How Many People Does the Pacifica Hybrid Seat?

The Pacifica Hybrid seats seven. Though the front seats have a high seating position, there's still ample headroom. The second and third rows provide plenty of headroom too. The second-row seats can slide forward to make climbing into the third row an easy task, and there's even a gap to pass through between the second-row seats. The power-sliding side doors have a large opening that makes climbing in and loading up hassle free. Cloth upholstery and a power-adjustable driver's seat are standard, while leather upholstery, a power-adjustable passenger seat, and heated and ventilated front seats are available.

All second-row seats, as well as the two outboard third-row seats, have full sets of LATCH child-seat connectors. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives the nonhybrid Pacifica’s LATCH system a Marginal rating (the second-lowest score possible) for ease of use. The IIHS notes that the anchors are buried deep in the seats and connecting hooks to the anchors requires too much force.

The Pacifica Hybrid's cabin looks and feels upscale thanks to mostly upmarket materials and handsome styling. However, the fit and finish is subpar compared to rivals with similar price tags.

Pacifica Hybrid Cargo Space

Due to their bulky battery packs, most hybrid vehicles have less cargo room than their gas-only counterparts. The Pacifica Hybrid is an exception. It has up to 140.5 cubic feet of cargo room – the same as the gas-only Pacifica. That's a bit below the maximum cargo capacity of most minivans, but it's still much more than you'll find in large SUVs. The batteries are placed beneath the second-row seats, which means the second row does not include Stow 'n Go seats (which fold flat into the floor) like the gas model. The third row does fold, however. A power liftgate is available.

All Pacifica Hybrid trims come with the Uconnect infotainment system, which includes an 8.4-inch touch screen, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration, satellite radio, and HD Radio. Pacifica Hybrid Engine: Peppy Acceleration

The Pacifica Hybrid's drivetrain is composed of a 3.6-liter V6 engine, two electric motors, and an automatic transmission. The electric motors provide immediate torque when you press the gas pedal, allowing you to quickly accelerate from a stop, and the V6 kicks in at higher speeds to help you pass or merge on the freeway.

Pacifica Hybrid Gas Mileage: Second to None

The Pacifica Hybrid is easily the most fuel-efficient minivan in the class. Running on electric power only, you can drive up to 33 miles and get 84 mpg-equivalent. Once the V6 engine kicks in, fuel economy falls to 32 mpg combined, which is still exceptional for a minivan. The gas-only Pacifica is a distant second in the class, getting 22 mpg combined.

It takes about 14 hours to charge the Pacifica Hybrid's batteries using the standard charger and a 120-volt outlet. Opt for a level 2 charger and a 240-volt outlet, and the batteries will be full in just around two hours.

Pacifica Hybrid Ride and Handling: Composed and Confident

Even though the Pacifica Hybrid is tuned for comfort (and it's very comfortable), it still maintains its composure when driving through turns, with little body lean. That means you won't have to worry about the van getting sloppy if you need to steer around an unexpected hazard. The Pacifica Hybrid is easy to maneuver around tight spaces thanks to its light steering. Front-wheel drive is standard in the Pacifica Hybrid. The regenerative brakes feel like normal friction brakes, without the vague mushiness that is common with many hybrid's brakes.
