Camaro vs. Mustang: The Battle of America’s Legendary Pony Cars

Ford debuted the Mustang in the middle of the 1964 model year to rapid success. Chevrolet answered in late 1966 with the 1967 Camaro, setting up a decades-long battle for not just sales, but the hearts of America's performance car buyers.

Though there have been gaps along the way, the Mustang and Camaro continue in fierce competition. While both have looks reminiscent of early models, the 2019 Ford Mustang and 2019 Chevrolet Camaro are no longer just muscle cars that excel in straight-line performance. They’re now agile sports coupes loaded with the latest safety and cabin technology.

The Mustang received a mid-cycle refresh in 2018 and was last fully redesigned for the 2015 model year. It holds a spot near the top of our ranking of sports cars. Camaro models received a refresh for 2019, following a thorough redesign in 2016. The new Camaro earns a midpack spot in our sports car ranking.
