2020 Chevrolet Trax Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 6.5

The 2020 Chevrolet Trax has a mixed interior quality and a decent list of user-friendly standard features. Cargo space is a little below average, and while passenger space is good, comfort is not.

  • The cabin of the new Trax isn’t at the top of the subcompact-crossover-SUV class in terms of overall aesthetics, but it’s still an agreeable and welcoming place." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)
  • "Blue stitching and patterned fabric do little to dress up the dour interior of our mid-grade LT version. The rock-hard cabin materials are the stuff of cost-cutting memos. The instrument cluster is dated, with a digital display that possesses all of the design elegance of a 1980s calculator watch. And the Trax literally stank, with an off-putting chemical odor that lingered for several months." -- Consumer Reports (2018)
  • Fortunately, our most damning gripes have been at least partly addressed in Chevy's refresh of the Trax for the 2017 model year. An all-new dashboard is primped with details like available contrasting stitching, chrome accents, and an analog speedometer that nestles around a new 3.5-inch digital information display. … Meanwhile, the Trax's door panels continue to be lined in cheap plastic, and the front passenger seat lacks an inboard armrest." -- Car and Driver (2017)

Seating

The Chevrolet Trax seats five people. Cloth upholstery, a four-way manually adjustable driver's seat, and a two-way manually adjustable passenger seat are standard. Optional features include deluxe cloth upholstery, synthetic leather upholstery, a six-way power-adjustable driver's seat, heated front seats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

To install child safety seats, the Trax has two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats. The lower anchors are set a little deep in the seats, and the tether anchors aren't distinct from other hardware.

Though the Trax's front seats are comfortable, they lack support, and space is tight in the cabin. The back row is roomy enough for adult passengers, however.

  • Comfortable seats are the high point. Beyond that, the Trax's ride quality exhibits quite a bit of choppiness, and there's a fair amount of road noise." -- Edmunds (2019)
  • "Commuting, zipping around the city, shopping at the mall, or taking a long weekend break, this small crossover SUV provides comfortable and supportive front seats." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)
  • Standing tall, the Trax provides easy access and chair-height seats. However, once squished inside the narrow confines, the driver is wedged between a too-close left foot rest and an intrusive center console. The seats themselves rival folding chairs when it comes to cushioning -- slender with overly firm side bolsters. The tight quarters mean the driver may well rub elbows with a front passenger. … Rear seat accommodations are commendable. The seat provides adequate space for two adults, with relatively good leg and head room. The seat is hard, however, with a short bottom cushion that limits support for the long haul." -- Consumer Reports (2018)

Interior Features

Standard features in the 2020 Trax include a 3.5-inch digital driver information display, power windows and locks, a rearview camera, and the Chevrolet Infotainment 3 System with a 7-inch touch screen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, a Wi-Fi hot spot, a six-speaker stereo, and two USB ports.

Optional features include satellite radio, cruise control, remote start, a household-style power outlet, proximity keyless entry, push-button start, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a sunroof, and a seven-speaker Bose premium stereo. Optional driver assistance features include rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, forward collision warning, and lane departure warning.

The standard infotainment system is user-friendly and simple to learn. Other interior controls are laid out in a clean manner and are easy to operate.

  • "Ever wondered why your car’s infotainment system can’t work like your smartphone? Now it can. Through the Chevy Trax’s ... setup with its 7-inch touch screen, smartphone integration enables the use of navigation apps, music and text messaging. All in a safe and easily accessible format." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The handsome instrument cluster features a large gauge display with an analog speedometer and tachometer readouts and a driver info window sits within the same binnacle." -- Autotrader (2019)
  • "Chevy's … system is easy to learn, and combined with OnStar, provides a robust set of features. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard, as is Wi-Fi hotspot connectivity." -- Edmunds (2019)

Cargo

The Trax has 18.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the back seat and 48.4 cubic feet with the second row folded. Those values are slightly below average for the class. A 60/40 split-folding rear seat is standard, and it folds down nearly flat.

  • "By providing more space for … cargo than several rivals, the Trax puts an emphasis on practicality. … Maximum cargo space is 48.4 cubic feet and the front-passenger seat folds flat for greater versatility." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)
  • Cargo volume is less than what some competitors offer, with maximum cargo space of only 48.4 cubic feet. The rear seats are at least easy to fold, and the fold-flat front seat provides extra space for longer items." -- Edmunds (2019)
  • "The Trax's second row offers a 60/40-split folding rear seat, which, when combined with the fold-forward front passenger seat, can accommodate items up to eight feet long. It seems sized right for a day of impulse shopping at the local bulk membership store." -- Autotrader (2019)
