2019 Chevrolet Traverse Interior Review

Interior: 8.9

The 2019 Chevy Traverse offers more passenger and cargo space than nearly every competitor, though its cabin quality lags behind that of rivals. The Traverse's interior looks OK, but several critics call out some odd styling touches and more low-rent materials than you'll find in other midsize SUVs. Its real interior strengths are the aforementioned spaciousness and user-friendly infotainment system.

  • "Build quality is acceptable, but it feels a bit low-rent for this price point. Many of the buttons look as if they could come from a Chevy Sonic that's half the price. It's even worse when you put the Traverse up against a comparably priced Honda, Mazda or Volkswagen rival." -- Edmunds
  • "The interior is also not hideous. It's actually pretty darn nice, with a fresh design that reminds me of other new Chevrolet models (mostly the Cruze) thanks to ample use of layering across the dash and door panels. It's nice in its $31,000 base trim, but things get properly fancy in the $53,000 Traverse High Country -- as things should, considering that price tag is bordering on ludicrous." -- CNET (2018)
  • "The interior is typical GM, and I don't mean that in a good way. The styling uses soft, organic shapes that looks awkward and bulky. Materials range from piano black to textured plastic to soft leather, leading to little cohesion. The standard leather in my test car was fine, but the brown stitching on the otherwise black and gray interior felt completely out of place. It was as if, at the last minute, they decided a sea of darkness needed some sort of contrast. The top-tier High Country trim uses better leather and suede inserts, but the general shape remains. The gauges look cheap, and most surfaces you touch are either hard plastic or low-grade rubber." -- Autoblog (2018)

The number of seats inside a Traverse varies depending on the trim. Lower trim levels come with a bench seat in the second row and can carry eight people. Upper trims feature two second-row captain's chairs, limiting seating to seven. Cloth upholstery and a rear-seat reminder come standard. Leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, heated and ventilated front seats, heated second-row seats, and a heated steering wheel are available.

Few class rivals offer the kind of interior space you get in this Chevrolet. The Traverse provides three rows of adult-friendly accommodations, and only extremely tall riders will feel shortchanged by the available head- and legroom. Additionally, the Traverse's seats feel comfortable, and you can easily climb in and out of any row.

For installing child car seats, there are two full sets of LATCH anchors on the second-row outboard seats and three tether anchors on the third-row seat. Models with a bench seat in the second row also include a tether anchor for the middle seat.

  • "With 400 fewer pounds to move around, an additional 3 inches of legroom for second-row passengers, and more third-row legroom than its Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander competitors, the Traverse solidified its place as one of the roomiest three-row crossover[s] available. For more room, you'll pretty much have to step up to a minivan or a full-size SUV such as a Chevrolet Suburban." -- Edmunds
  • "The front seats and 2nd-row seats offer up ample headroom and legroom, and the rear bench can accommodate three across without difficulty. The third row is tighter, but still acceptable for kids for long trips, and there's a ton of cargo space behind the third row even without using the hidden storage area under the floor." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)
  • "With both [seating] setups, you get Chevy's trick SmartSlide curbside second-row seat. A simple lever moves it up and forward out of the way, allowing easy access to the rear seat. You can even move it with a child seat still in place. Competitors offer similar solutions, but Chevy's is one of the easiest to use." -- Autoblog (2018)

Interior Features

Standard features in the Traverse include tri-zone automatic climate control, Chevrolet's Teen Driver, a rearview camera, and the MyLink infotainment system with a 7-inch touch screen, Bluetooth, six USB ports, a Wi-Fi hot spot, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Available features include a sunroof, wireless device charging, a 10-speaker Bose audio system, satellite radio, a rear-seat entertainment system, and an upgraded MyLink system with an 8-inch touch screen and navigation.

Available active safety features include a surround-vision camera, a rear camera mirror, forward collision warning, forward automatic braking, front pedestrian braking, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, rear parking sensors, and rear cross traffic alert.

This Chevy's infotainment controls are smartly arranged, though some drivers may wish for a shorter reach to the center stack. The intuitive touch-screen menu layout means the MyLink system has virtually no learning curve, and the sharp graphics make the screen easy to read.

  • "The new Chevy Traverse interior features a big, bright infotainment screen complemented by an available full-color display between the main gauges." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)
  • "The [MyLink] system is better than average, with a simple layout and a number of integrated apps like iHeartRadio, Pandora and Audiobooks.com. Those apps sync directly with your account, so no smartphone needed. The data is pulled from the 4G LTE system. The WiFi hotspot can connect up to 10 devices. Still, if you're like me, you'll be happy to know that Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are available." -- Autoblog (2018)
  • "Our High County model had a 4G hotspot that consistently delivered quick internet access to entertain my teens, and the new 'audiobooks.com' app synched my iPhone to the Traverse sound system for on-demand narration of some classic Stephen King novels. Apple CarPlay continues to impress with its seamless integration of text, navigation and music functionality, making all three simple to use without distraction." -- Forbes (2018)

The Traverse provides 23 cubic feet of cargo room behind the rearmost row, 57.8 cubic feet with the third-row seats folded, and 98.2 cubic feet with the second and third rows folded. These totals put the Traverse ahead of almost every class rival and even some large SUVs.

There's also plenty of small-item storage throughout the cabin, including a hidden bin beneath the rear cargo floor. A power-folding third-row bench seat, a power liftgate, and a hands-free power liftgate are available.

  • "There is abundant space for adults, child seats, water bottles and whatever else you can think of. The Traverse is one of the largest vehicles in the class and it pays dividends on the inside, where there's plenty of room for passengers or cargo of almost any kind." -- Edmunds
  • "Even with the third row up, there's a decent sized cargo area. The load floor has a small bin underneath, increasing the usable space. It's wide and deep enough for carry-on luggage and a purse or backpack. Just under that bin is the spare tire, now mounted inside the vehicle. Yes, you'll have to pull all your luggage out when you get a flat, but that beats having to crawl around on the ground trying to remove the spare. The second and third rows fold flat, creating an absolutely cave-like cargo area. … Flat sides mean there's nothing for cargo to catch on when sliding in or out." -- Autoblog (2018)
  • "How roomy is the 2018 Traverse? There's more than 157 cubic feet of passenger volume plus 23 cu.-ft. of cargo space behind the third-row seat. That's more luggage space than in the trunk of any full-size sedan. … Looking at it another way, the new midsize Traverse has more back seat and cargo space than the full-size Chevy Tahoe." -- New York Daily News (2018)
