Scorecard

Performance: 8.3

Test drivers praise the 2016 Chevy Tahoe's composed handling, comfortable ride and potent V8 engine. They note that the Tahoe is fairly easy to drive in most settings, despite its large size. Critics say the Tahoe's brakes are strong and the steering is responsive. They find that the transmission performs well with the V8 engine.

  • "Other than confined city driving, which can be a bit challenging given the Tahoe's size, we found most driving situations to be quite comfortable and free of drama." -- AutoTrader
  • "Despite their size, all versions of these SUVs are surprisingly easy to drive." -- Motor Trend (2015)
  • "The 2015 Chevy Tahoe rides rather well, with a quiet confidence on rough roads that feels like at least a match for any of its competitors." -- Autoblog (2015)

Acceleration and Power

A 355-horsepower 5.3-liter V8 engine and a six-speed automatic transmission come standard in the 2016 Tahoe. The EPA estimates the Tahoe can get up to 16/23 mpg city/highway which is average for the class. The Tahoe's fuel economy is improved by a system called Active Fuel Management that deactivates four of the Tahoe's eight cylinders when they aren't needed. According to Chevrolet, the Tahoe is able to tow up to 8,600 pounds.

Most auto writers report the Tahoe's V8 engine generates ample power, even when hauling heavy loads. However, a few say the gas pedal has to be punched to get good acceleration. They add that the Active Fuel Management system transitions smoothly from using four cylinders to using all eight. Moreover, the automatic transmission makes good use of the engine's power.

  • "The 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe's standard 5.3-liter V8 has more than enough muscle to move people, cargo or a good-sized trailer without really breaking a sweat. The six-speed automatic proves to be a good match for this engine, whether you're accelerating away from a stoplight or cruising down the freeway." -- Edmunds
  • "While driving around Lake Tahoe for three days, there was never a want or need for more power. All of the test vehicles handled the hills well, whether going up or down." -- Motor Trend (2015)
  • "Both engines are quiet and smooth unless you punch it. And then there's plenty of muscle on tap." -- Popular Mechanics (2015)
  • The EcoTec V8 is a smooth engine, but with just 5.3 liters, it requires a fairly heavy foot to get much acceleration. On the open road it cycles seamlessly between V4 and V8 modes. …" -- AutoWeek (2015)

Handling and Braking

The 2016 Chevy Tahoe's steering is responsive and delivers good feedback, according to reviewers. They add the Tahoe has composed handling and a quiet, comfortable ride. Some reviewers say the brakes are firm, which they appreciate in a large SUV. Rear-wheel drive is standard and four-wheel drive is available.

  • "During our extended seat time driving the Tahoe, we experienced a full-size SUV handling remarkably well. The steering is precise with just enough assist to allow easy maneuvers without creating a numb response on twisting back roads. The Tahoe is extremely quiet inside, and its ride is comfortable and controlled." -- AutoTrader
  • "The 2015 Chevy Tahoe is still a big, heavy full-size SUV, yet Chevy has managed to infuse the new Tahoe with a smoother ride, sharper steering, and overall better driving... dynamics than you might expect from such a large vehicle." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)
  • "Beyond cosmetic upgrades, GM's done superb work on handling. These are still very large vehicles, but they're a piece of cake to pilot." -- Popular Mechanics (2015)
  • "We found the brake pedal reassuringly firm, and that's comforting when piloting such a large vehicle full of precious cargo... like seven human beings." -- Autoblog (2015)
