2009 Chevrolet Tahoe Review

The 2009 Chevrolet Tahoe offers three rows of comfortable seats and a respectable towing capacity, making it a good choice for anyone looking for a 2009 large SUV.

Pros & Cons

  • Respectable fuel economy
  • Spacious interior
  • Third row must be removed to expand cargo space

New for 2009

  • 6.2-liter V8 became available on LTZ trim
  • Six-speed automatic transmission became available

2009 Chevrolet Tahoe Overview

When it was new, reviewers praised the 2009 Chevrolet Tahoe for its comfortable cabin and pleasing driving dynamics. The Tahoe’s fuel economy estimates are good for the class. An available front bench seat increases seating capacity to nine, which makes the Tahoe a smart choice for large families.

The 2009 Tahoe is available with three V8 engines, ranging in size from a 4.8-liter unit to a 6.2-liter engine that’s available on the top LTZ trim. The midrange 5.3-liter V8 is arguably the best choice, as it has more power and similar fuel economy to the base 4.8-liter. Critics who tested the 5.3-liter Tahoe said that the engine makes plenty of power, and with it, the Tahoe hits its maximum towing capacity of 8,400 pounds. Fuel economy with either two- or four-wheel drive is 14/20 mpg city/highway with the 5.3-liter V8, while figures for the other two engines are slightly worse.

Reviewers were generally pleased with the Tahoe’s maximum cargo capacity of 108.9 cubic feet, but bemoaned that to use all the space, you have to remove the third-row seats. Otherwise, the Tahoe was praised for its well-executed interior. Critics found the seats generally comfortable, though some noted that the third row is best left for kids, which is a typical comment for third rows. Standard equipment includes Bluetooth, an auxiliary input jack, dual-zone climate control and GM’s OnStar telematics system. A fully-loaded model could include heated leather seats, a blind zone alert system, park assist, navigation and a rear-seat entertainment system. The Tahoe has experienced few changes since 2007, so you might be able to save some money by shopping for an older model.

Other Cars to Consider

If you’re looking at a Tahoe, be sure to check out the 2009 GMC Yukon as well. The two are very similar, sharing the same mechanical components, as well as the difficult-to-remove third row. Reviewers favored the performance of the Tahoe, though the Yukon has an available Denali luxury trim that the Tahoe can’t match. But if you can do without the Denali’s luxury trappings, shop for both and find the model that offers you the best value.

Another SUV to consider is the 2009 Ford Expedition. It offers similar cargo volume and fuel economy to the Tahoe, but its third row folds into the floor, making the interior easier to reconfigure on the go. While reviewers generally liked the Expedition, most found that of the two, the Tahoe has better handling.
