2020 Chevrolet Suburban Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 7.9

The 2020 Chevrolet Suburban has a quality interior, class-leading cargo space, and user-friendly infotainment features. However, its third-row accommodations are about average for the large SUV class.

  • "From its marvelous seats to the upscale look and feel emanating from the dash and door panels, the Suburban feels more like a prestige luxury car than a family transport vehicle." -- Autotrader
  • "The interior is attractive and everything is within fairly easy reach of the driver, making controlling this giant vehicle that much less stressful." -- Edmunds
  • "The … Suburban's upscale interior grabs your attention from the moment you step inside; its artful shapes, high-end materials and excellent fit-and-finish seem more appropriate for a luxury sedan than a full-size SUV." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)

Seating

The Chevrolet Suburban seats between seven and nine people. Cloth upholstery, a 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat, a six-way power-adjustable passenger seat, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel are standard.

Options include leather upholstery, heated front seats, driver's seat memory settings, 12-way power-adjustable front seats, a 10-way power-adjustable passenger seat, ventilated front seats, heated second-row seats, power-adjustable pedals, and a heated, power tilt-and telescoping steering wheel with memory function.

The Suburban’s front seats and second row offer plenty of space and comfort for passengers. The second-row seats tumble forward for access to the third row, where seating space is adequate.

If you need to secure child safety seats, there are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the Suburban’s second-row outboard seats, as well as upper tether anchors for each third-row seat. The second-row tether anchors can be confused for other hardware, but the third-row tether anchors are user-friendly.

  • Everyone will have plenty of room and be plenty comfortable in the Suburban's front two rows. The third row will handle two adults, but the seat cushions are thin and flat and are uncomfortable on anything but a short trip. It's disappointing in a vehicle this big for the third-row seats to feel like an afterthought." -- Edmunds
  • The cavernous interior includes ample head- and legroom. … The 2nd-row's comfy seats recline but, unfortunately, don't slide fore and aft. The third row has enough foot- and legroom for adults, at least for shorter trips, and kids will be fine." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "For sheer passenger space, it's hard to surpass what the Suburban offers. When equipped with the available front bench seat (a rarity these days) the Suburban can hold up to nine people." -- Autotrader (2016)

Interior Features

Standard features in the 2020 Suburban include tri-zone automatic climate control, a household-style power outlet, remote start, a rearview camera, rear parking sensors, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and the Teen Driver system, which lets you do things like set speed and audio volume limits for secondary drivers, as well as monitor their driving performance.

An 8-inch touch-screen infotainment system is also standard. It comes with Bluetooth, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, voice recognition, USB ports, a six-speaker stereo, satellite radio, HD Radio, and a Wi-Fi hot spot.

The touch-screen system in the Suburban is generally responsive and user-friendly, with large icons and a variety of intuitive and clearly marked physical buttons and knobs. A few critics noted issues with the performance of certain features, including voice recognition, the audio system, and the rearview camera.

Optional features include a nine-speaker premium stereo, a 10-speaker Bose surround-sound system, wireless device charging, proximity keyless entry, navigation, a sunroof, a rear-seat Blu-ray entertainment system, an 8-inch driver information display, a universal garage door opener, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

Available driver assistance features include forward collision warning, forward automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, automatic high-beam headlights, a safety alert driver's seat, front parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, a head-up display, and adaptive cruise control.

  • The … infotainment system is especially nice, with a large, vivid color screen populated by easily understood touchscreen icons. The voice-recognition software could use a bit more schooling." -- Autotrader
  • The Suburban comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration and a quick-acting touchscreen. Features such as OnStar's 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot and plenty of USB and 12-volt charging ports support to the Suburban's likely family-hauling duties. On the downside, some of the driver assistance features, such as the lane departure system's vibrating seats, are mediocre and feel a bit gimmicky in their execution. The backup camera lacks clarity and high resolution, and we wish the audio system was of higher quality, especially on the top trim levels." -- Edmunds
  • "We were more impressed, though, with the well-thought-out switchgear." -- Automobile Magazine (2015)

Cargo

The Suburban has 39.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind its third row, 76.7 cubic feet behind the second row, and a maximum of 121.7 cubic feet with both rows folded down. Those values are among the highest in the large SUV class.

The load floor is high, which can make it difficult to put in heavy items. Optional cargo upgrades include a power liftgate, hands-free liftgate access, and power-folding second- and third-row seats.

  • The flat load floor and power-folding second- and third-row seats are welcome features, but the high cargo floor liftover height takes away some usability. It's downright difficult to load bulky or heavy objects without some help." -- Edmunds
  • "A high cargo floor provides space for the flat-fold 3rd-row seats, but that space is not wasted -- under the floor is a handy hidden storage area." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)
  • "Although not quite as commodious as it was previously, the Suburban is still a supersized family bus. Its 39.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third seat (versus 45.8 cubic feet previously) should easily accommodate a family's luggage for a weeklong vacation and/or an extra-large dog crate." -- Automobile Magazine (2015)
