2019 Chevrolet Sonic Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 8.1

The 2019 Chevrolet Sonic has an unimpressive interior quality, but its user-friendly infotainment system adds an air of modernity. Passenger and cargo space are ample for the class.

  • "Unfortunately, cheap plastics abound and thick roof pillars reduce visibility." -- Edmunds
  • "Whether sedan or hatchback, the Sonic's 5-passenger interior is eye-pleasing, roomy for its size and has an air of sophistication thanks to the standard 7-inch touch screen that dominates the center front of the cockpit." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)
  • The new gauge cluster is more traditional, placing a conventional tachometer to the left of a large analog speedometer that replaces last year's bright-blue digital display. An optional enhanced Driver Information Center collects everything from current speed and direction to average fuel economy and distance driven into one easy-to-read package." -- Autotrader (2017)

Seating

The Chevrolet Sonic seats five people on standard cloth upholstery with manually adjustable front seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Options include a six-way power-adjustable driver's seat, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, deluxe cloth seats, or leatherette upholstery.

The Sonic has two complete LATCH connections and a tether anchor for the middle seat. The lower anchors are set too deep in the seat cushions, so there's little room to maneuver your hands around the anchors.

The front seats offer plenty of comfort and support, as well as room for tall occupants. Likewise, the second row is spacious and easy to get in and out of.

  • "The comfortable front seats are a highlight, with decent bolstering for spirited driving and a comfortable driver-seat armrest. … There's plenty of head- and legroom both up front and in the back, though elbow room is tight all around. The large door openings make it easy to get in and out." -- Edmunds
  • "The rear seat is one of the roomiest in the segment." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)
  • "When combined, the Sonic's supportive seats, excellent suspension, standard driver armrest -- a rarity in the subcompact market -- and tilt-telescopic steering wheel made for one of the most comfortable rides of any small vehicle we've driven." -- Autotrader (2017)

Interior Features

Standard features in the 2019 Chevrolet Sonic include OnStar connectivity services, a rearview camera, and a 7-inch touch-screen infotainment system with a four-speaker stereo, Bluetooth, USB ports, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a built-in Wi-Fi hot spot. Optional features include power windows, cruise control, satellite radio, a six-speaker stereo, proximity keyless entry, push-button start, remote start, a sunroof, rear parking sensors, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, and forward collision warning.

The MyLink touch-screen interface is user friendly and the menus are easy to navigate. However, it can occasionally hesitate when processing commands.

  • The Sonic's gauges and controls are well laid out and easy to operate. Standard on all trims is a 7-inch touchscreen with the newest version of Chevy's superb MyLink interface, which also includes smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. MyLink's menus are intuitive enough that it doesn't take long for a first-time user to master its functions and controls. Our only gripe is that it sometimes takes a few beats for inputs to be recognized." -- Edmunds (2017)
  • Chevy's MyLink infotainment system helps drivers keep connected to their music, messages and apps while keeping their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road." -- Kelley Blue Book (2016)
  • "Where the Aveo had the look of a 1990s bargain-bin leftover, the Sonic is sharp, modern and full of well-designed and thoughtful features." -- Autotrader (2015)

Cargo

The Chevrolet Sonic sedan has 14.9 cubic feet of trunk space, which is great for the class. The hatchback model has 19 cubic feet behind its rear seat and 47.7 cubic feet with the second row folded down. A 60/40 split-folding back seat is standard.

  • "Utility is part of the Sonic game plan. The sedan version features a big 14.9-cubic-foot trunk, while the hatchback features 19 cubic feet behind its folding rear seats. Both figures are more than what you typically get from this class of car." -- Edmunds
  • "… the versatile and recommendable hatchback models offer 47.7 cubic feet of cargo room with rear seats folded. That's still less than a Honda Fit hatchback, but the Chevy has more space than the Honda with the rear seats up -- 19 cubic feet vs. the Fit's 16.6. We also like the handy dual-glove-box arrangement." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)
  • "Sedan trunks are deceptively large, with a wide aperture and plenty of space front to back. Hatchbacks are not quite as versatile as the Honda Fit, but they have a fair amount of room. The rear seat backs fold but rest slightly above the cargo floor. … [H]atchbacks have a panel behind the seat backs that gives the perception of a completely flat load floor while providing a covered storage space underneath. It's a clever arrangement that we wish was standard on the LS hatch as well. Sonic includes two gloveboxes. The top one houses the auxiliary stereo and USB input ports. Chevrolet thoughtfully includes a cutout for the cable, and any connected device can rest in a small pod on either side of the audio deck. There's a shallow tray on top of the dashboard, a small cubby beneath the climate controls, door map pockets, and a total of three cupholders that make up the car's interior storage." -- Consumer Guide (2013)
