2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Interior

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Interior Review

Interior: 7.5

The 2020 Chevrolet Silverado has a roomy cabin, plenty of cargo space in the bed, and user-friendly technology. However, many critics complain that the cabin's materials quality is underwhelming.

  • "Interior design details get better toward the upper end of the trim levels, but interior comfort is good all the way around." -- Autotrader
  • "The most glaring deficiency of the … Silverado is its interior, which just isn't up to snuff compared to the most recent Ford and Ram offerings. … None of the materials have a premium feel, and the trim – faux wood in some models, an odd cross-hatch in others – looks cheap. Even the most expensive High Country, which replaces the aluminum-painted surround of the center stack with a bronze-painted surround, lacks the polish of Ford's Platinum and Limited trim levels." -- Autoblog (2019)
  • "Similarly, the LT Trail Boss I drove featured lots of black soft-touch materials that felt fine, but didn't look like anything special." -- The Detroit Free Press (2019)

The Chevrolet Silverado seats up to six people. It comes standard with vinyl upholstery and four-way manually adjustable front seats. Options include cloth or leather upholstery, 10-way power-adjustable front seats, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and heated rear seats.

The truck’s front seats are reasonably comfortable. Crew Cab models have a roomy back seat.

For securing child safety seats, Silverado models with a second row have two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the outboard seats, as well as an upper tether for the middle seat. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says the tether anchors can be confused for other hardware, and lower anchors are set deep in the seats.

  • "The new Silverado doesn't just ride better, it mostly sits better, too. A new tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel eases the search for the best driving position, and the front seats offer decent support. … In back, the four extra inches of wheelbase produce abundant rear legroom. We're less jazzed about the Silverado's rear seatback angle, which reminds us of an airline seat before you hit the recline button." -- Edmunds (2019)
  • "With multiple adjustments and enormous travel fore and aft, Silverado seat positioning is a land of vast opportunity, even for NBA-sized folks. Likewise, comfort and refinement darn near match the marks set by a very good passenger car." -- New York Daily News (2019)
  • "It's not just front-seat passengers that are treated well. The Silverado's aforementioned larger cab primarily works out to three inches of added rear-seat leg room on four-door crew cabs (swelling from 40.9 to 43.9 inches)." -- CNET (2019)

Interior Features

Standard features in the 2020 Silverado include a 7-inch touch-screen infotainment system with a two-speaker stereo, Bluetooth, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, a USB port, a rearview camera, and the Teen Driver system, which lets you do things like set speed and audio volume limits for secondary drivers, as well as monitor their driving performance.

Optional features include power windows and locks, keyless entry, cruise control, remote start, OnStar, a 4.2-inch driver information display, semi-automatic climate control, dual-zone automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, a universal garage door opener, an 8-inch digital instrument cluster, and two household-style power outlets.

Available infotainment features include a six-speaker stereo, a Wi-Fi hot spot, satellite radio, two additional USB ports, two second-row USB ports, an 8-inch touch screen, HD Radio, navigation, a seven-speaker Bose premium sound system, and wireless device charging.

Optional advanced safety features include front and rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, a high-definition rearview camera, a safety alert seat, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, forward automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, automatic high-beam headlights, a following distance indicator, a surround-view camera system, a rearview mirror camera, and a head-up display.

The infotainment system is user-friendly and features straightforward menus. Most of the dashboard controls are laid out intuitively, but it can be hard to reach some of them from the driver's seat.

  • "The driver information center and 8-inch infotainment screen are carryover from the previous generation, as is the steering wheel control layout. The center stack and air vents now sport a very trapezoidal look, as do many of the interior design features. From a usability stand point, we found the new controls to be intuitive and easy to use." -- Truck Trend (2019)
  • "Audio systems on these vehicles included volume and tuning knobs, with other settings being made through virtual buttons on the large dash screen. Climate controls include rotary temperature and fan switches, with mode being adjusted with individual buttons that allow defrost, dash, and floor vents to be activated simultaneously – a nice touch. The only down side here is that elements of the audio and climate systems that are far to the right might be a little out of easy reach for the driver." -- Consumer Guide (2019)
  • "The Silverado's new infotainment system combines crisper, more modern graphics and fonts with minimized latency between commands. While base models receive seven-inch touchscreens, many models will feature eight-inch units, and the available navigation system features single-line address entry and sharper-looking maps. Apple CarPlay and Android auto are aboard, too. The new system isn't as visually impressive as the optional gargantuan 12-inch vertical Uconnect hub in the Ram, but it's plenty big." -- CNET (2019)

The Silverado is available with 5-foot-10-inch, 6-foot-7-inch, or 8-foot-2-inch beds. Cargo volume is good overall, and there's a long list of standard and available features for increasing utility. A few critics note that the sidewalls are high, making it hard to reach over and into the bed.

  • "New stamping methods and higher-grade steel has enabled a bed that's not only stronger, it's seven-inches wider and it's deeper, too. Compared to last year's model, the resulting roll-formed Durabed offers 10 more cubic feet of space in short- and standard-box guise, and a whopping 14 more cubes in long-box form. Depending on configuration, the Durabed is around 20 percent more capacious than rivals." -- CNET (2019)
  • "The cargo bed is about seven inches wider between the walls, which increases bed capacity. It also provides space for accessory bedside bins with locking covers that allow you to carry good-sized items under lock and key. The bedside walls are also quite tall – another aid to capacity – though that means even average-size folks standing beside the bed might have trouble reaching over the walls to grab something off the floor of the bed." -- Consumer Guide (2019)
  • "Regardless of cab profile, each Silverado boasts a larger bed that offers almost 7 inches of extra floor width and greater load volume. Chevy claims its short bed can swallow a greater volume of cargo than the competitors' regular-sized bed. The 3-piece steel bed now has 12 total anchors, each pair rated for 500 lbs. They're mounted higher than before, making them easier to use if you're reaching in from the sides, but they're still a stretch if you're short." -- New York Daily News (2019)
