2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 was new.

Scorecard

Interior: 8.4

If cabin quality is a priority for you, then the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is right up your alley. There are plenty of high-end materials throughout the interior, lending an upscale feel. The higher trims’ cabins are especially nice, bordering on luxury-vehicle levels of quality.

The Silverado provides comfortable and spacious seating in both rows, and there are plenty of available tech features to choose from. Thanks to easily reachable dash controls, all of the in-vehicle tech is easy to control.

There are three different bed lengths available, depending on which cab you want. Regardless, the Silverado offers features that maximize bed usability, like a built-in bumper step and a tailgate that you can easily operate with one hand.

  • "Even more basic models of the 2017 Chevy Silverado benefit from the sensible layout and ample storage, and the plastics are nicely textured and feel upscale. Of course, if you opt for higher-end models, you get higher-end materials, with the High Country models laying on the luxury nice and thick." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Even so, as it sits, the Silverado remains a truck-guy's truck, with an upright dashboard boasting a full array of analog gauges monitoring all manner of engine parameters-and an elegant simplicity not present in the more forward-looking Ram 1500 and Ford F-150." -- Car and Driver (2016)
  • "To capitalize on the new, more refined feel, Chevy did some serious work on the truck's interior. The gauges, dash, seats and even the carpet give the truck a more upscale feel in comparison to the previous Silverado." -- AutoTrader (2015)

Seating

The Silverado seats three in Regular Cab models and six in Double and Crew Cab models. All Silverados are available with front bucket seats that drop seating capacity by one (a three-person front split-bench seat is standard). The seats come standard with vinyl upholstery, but cloth and leather seats are available. You can also opt for power-adjustable front seats, heated and ventilated front seats, and a heated steering wheel.

The Silverado’s cabin is quiet, and the front seats provide plenty of room. When fully upgraded, the front seats also feel more upscale than in most trucks. However, drivers may find that the grip handles on the windshield pillars reduce visibility a bit.

Like the front seats, the rear seats have ample space, and adults can ride in the back without feeling cramped. And all of the seats are supportive, so no matter where you sit, you won’t get uncomfortable on longer drives.

  • "Despite its boxy design, there is an eerie lack of wind and road noise when driving the full-size Chevrolet Silverado pickup, a testament to just how far GM's suspension and body engineering technologies have come." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • We found terrific front and rear room, although the more raked windshield seems to provide less headroom than before in sunroof models." -- Left Lane News (2016)
  • "With a choice of bench or buckets (depending on trim level) up front, as well as available heating, ventilation and adjustable lumbar support, the Silverado's thickly padded seats promise plenty of long-trip comfort." -- Edmunds (2014)

Interior Features

Standard features in the Silverado include a four-speaker audio system with a 4.2-inch display and USB port, as well as the Teen Driver system.

Available features include a power sunroof, wireless device charging, satellite radio, HD Radio, a seven-speaker Bose audio system, a rear-seat entertainment system, active noise cancellation, dual-zone climate control, the Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system with a 7- or 8-inch touch screen, Bluetooth, voice-activated technology, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and OnStar with 4G LTE and a built-in Wi-Fi hot spot.

The Silverado’s infotainment system features a responsive touch screen and an intuitive interface, making it much easier to use than some other systems on the market. The system also includes connectivity options like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, so you should have no trouble syncing your phone with your truck.

In addition to the touch screen, the dashboard features physical buttons for some cabin functions. All of the buttons are large, so it’s easy to figure out what they do, and they’re easy to use if you have gloves on.

The Silverado offers several driver assistance features. The most notable is the new-for-2017 Teen Driver feature, which lets you set speed and volume limits that other drivers can’t exceed.

Besides Teen Driver, there’s a rearview camera and front and rear parking sensors that make it easier to maneuver the truck in tight spaces. Other useful features include lane keep assist, which helps you avoid drifting on the highway. You can also add forward collision warning and automatic forward braking, both of which can help you avoid low-speed crashes. The optional Safety Alert Seat vibrates the driver's seat in different locations to warn the driver of various hazards, such as a possible forward or rearward collision.

  • Even pickup owners want the latest and greatest in infotainment, which is why the availability of Apple CarPlay in the 2017 Chevy Silverado makes so much sense. With CarPlay, owners can integrate their Apple smartphones, making many of the apps and features available via the truck's touch screen." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "As we mentioned, there is Apple CarPlay (Android Auto integration joins the party in a few months), and it's operated via the uplevel 7.0- and 8.0-inch MyLink touch screens. The look of the screens is familiar, although they now share internal hardware with the upgraded units in the 2016 Malibu, which means they respond more quickly to inputs than before." -- Car and Driver (2016)
  • "We like the Silverado's large, easy-to-use buttons and switches. Just below the radio and climate controls are several large switches that control features such as parking sensors and Hill Descent Control. All these switches are large enough that real truck folks won't have to take off their gloves to use them." -- AutoTrader (2015)

Cargo

All cab variants of the Silverado are offered with a 6-foot-6-inch bed. That’s the only bed available on Double Cab Models. Regular Cab models are also available with an 8-foot bed, and Crew Cab models are also available with a 5-foot-8-inch bed.

No matter which length you choose, the Silverado has features that make the bed easier to use. A step is built into the Silverado’s rear bumper, making it easy to climb into the bed. Chevrolet’s EZ Lift-and-Lower tailgate, which lets you easily drop and raise the tailgate without much effort, is available. The EZ-Lift tailgate requires such a light touch that you can operate it with just two fingers.

In addition to the three bed lengths and the usable bed features, the Silverado offers several small-item storage spaces throughout the cabin.

  • "Steps mounted in the rear bumper along with reworked stake holes make it easy to climb into the bed, while an easy open/close option allows the tailgate to be accessed using just a pair of fingers." -- Left Lane News (2015)
  • "There's plenty of storage space inside thanks to a rash of small cubbies cut into each door panel and a new floor console that's capable of holding file folders, small laptops, and so on. Even models with bench seats boast a sizable armrest storage compartment along with a lockable underseat storage area." -- Automobile Magazine (2014)
  • "Notches cut into the rear bumper and the bed rail serve as step and handhold, respectively, to make climbing into the bed easier." -- Car and Driver (2014)
