2020 Chevrolet Malibu Interior Review

Interior: 6.6

The 2020 Chevrolet Malibu has an unimpressive interior with some low-grade materials and surfaces. Passenger and cargo room are about average for the midsize car class, and while the infotainment system is generally straightforward, some functions can be a bit complicated.

  • "The overall cabin aesthetic is a bit underwhelming." -- Edmunds
  • "While the interior could be described as Nice Uncluttered Basic, seat heaters are not included nor even available in the RS. For luxury features, we had to take consolation in the leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob." -- Automobile Magazine (2019)
  • "Too bad the rest of the Malibu's interior isn't so lovely. The Infotainment 3 display sits atop a dash covered in some really cheap materials, from the poor plastics that make up the switchgear to the cloth fabric that lines the passenger side dash and flows under the center stack. Buttons and dials are neatly organized and all vehicle controls are easy to locate quickly, but seriously, this whole cabin looks like it's a decade old. Much of the interior is comprised of chunky black and gray plastics that look as bad as they feel. Commonly used touch points like the wiper and turn signal stalks, as well as the center console storage cover, feel flimsy and cheap, or like they're just going to break." -- CNET (2019)

The Malibu seats five people and comes standard with cloth upholstery and six-way manually adjustable front seats. Options include leather upholstery, an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat, a six-way power-adjustable passenger seat, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and a heated steering wheel.

The Malibu's front seats have decent support for short trips, but they can then start to feel uncomfortable. Headroom is good all around, though some critics find rear legroom lacking.

For securing child safety seats, the Malibu has two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats, as well as an upper tether anchor for the rear middle seat. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says the lower anchors are set deeply in the seats, and it requires some force to attach the car-seat straps to them.

  • "On the inside, there's roomy seating up front. But there's less rear legroom compared to what you'll find in some other top sedans." -- Edmunds
  • "The profound adequacy extends to the seats, which support well for about an hour and then begin to wear on the back." -- Autoblog (2019)
  • "The gray cloth seats are comfortable enough, but offer no real support for your thigh or back. … The Malibu offers generous accommodations for rear seat passengers, with ample head- and legroom." -- CNET (2019)

Interior Features

Standard features in the 2020 Malibu include a rearview camera, proximity keyless entry, and an 8-inch touch-screen infotainment system with a six-speaker stereo, Bluetooth, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay.

Optional features include dual-zone automatic climate control, remote start, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a dual-pane sunroof, a Wi-Fi hot spot, satellite radio, navigation, a nine-speaker Bose premium stereo, an 8-inch digital driver information display, a household-style power outlet, two rear USB ports, and wireless device charging.

Optional driver assistance features include rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, forward automatic emergency braking, automatic high-beam headlights, a following distance indicator, adaptive cruise control, automatic parking assist, and an electronic parking brake.

Also available is the Teen Driver system, which lets you do things like set speed and audio volume limits for secondary drivers, as well as monitor their driving performance.

Some critics say that the Malibu's infotainment system is user-friendly and operates smoothly, but others report problems accessing some functions and say that the display resolution isn’t as sharp as rivals’.

  • "The report on the infotainment system is mixed, too. GM's Chevrolet Link 3 system features useful smartphone integration and big graphics, but its standard display looks lower-res than the competition." -- Edmunds
  • "Chevy's new Infotainment 3 setup finds its way into the Malibu … with an 8-inch touchscreen standard across all trim levels. I really like this interface -- the high-resolution display uses neatly organized and intuitively labeled icons, and inputs are met with instant response." -- CNET (2019)
  • "Updated with Chevy's latest software, the infotainment system is better than basic, but we're not sold on it. For one thing, we couldn't figure out how to enter a destination and had to call OnStar for navigation. The 4G LTE connectivity includes a Wi-Fi hotspot, and it was useful when we twice found ourselves off-course." -- Automobile Magazine (2019)

The Malibu has 15.8 cubic feet of trunk space, which is about average for a midsize car. The trunk opening is large, but the rear seats don't fold completely flat, limiting the ability to haul longer items.

  • "The Malibu offers … 15.8 cubic feet of cargo space in the trunk to handle a family's worth of luggage." -- CNET (2019)
  • "Small item cabin storage is unremarkable for a midsize sedan, but the 15.8-cubic-foot trunk is large, if admittedly average for the segment." -- Edmunds (2017)
  • "The trunk is wide at the rear, but sickle-type lid hinges dip a bit into the load area. Upper-line vehicles forfeit a spare tire to a sealing kit and pump, and that leaves a fair amount of 'unofficial' storage space beneath the floor. Folding the rear seat backs leaves a 2-stage 4-inch step up from the cargo floor, which means sliding long items forward poses a challenge." -- Consumer Guide (2016)
