2017 Chevrolet Impala Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2017 Chevrolet Impala was new.

Scorecard

Interior: 8.8

The 2017 Chevy Impala has a well-designed and roomy interior, with mostly high-quality materials. The back seat is spacious, even for a larger sedan. The infotainment system is straightforward and engaging.

  • The Impala's dynamic, modern exterior writes checks that its interior is pleased to cash. The graceful dual-cowl dashboard flows organically into the door panels, creating a wraparound effect that has become a GM trademark as of late. … The interior design is sharp, though materials quality in some places is underwhelming. Leather upholstery comes standard on the Impala Premier." -- Edmunds
  • "Pop open a door, and the Impala's greatest asset immediately becomes apparent: a cavernous and well-equipped interior. Passenger room is abundant, especially in the palatial rear seat area, and there's also impressive material quality to go with the spatial quantity: available perforated leather upholstery, sueded microfiber, contrast stitching and soft-touch materials give the cabin a decidedly upscale feel." -- Left Lane News (2016)
  • "The Chevy Impala … may be considered a mainstream vehicle, but inside it feels more like a premium or even luxury sedan." -- Kelley Blue Book (2016)

Seating

The 2017 Impala seats five on standard cloth seats. A power-adjustable driver’s seat is standard, while a power-adjustable passenger seat, heated or ventilated seats, and leather interior are available in higher trim levels.

The Impala’s cabin is spacious overall and offers plenty of head- and legroom wherever a person is seated. All of the seats are comfortable, but the front seats are flat and lack support, especially in hard turns.

There are two complete LATCH car-seat attachments on the outboard rear seats, and the middle seat has a dedicated lower anchor with the ability to borrow from another seat. All the lower anchors are buried deep in the seat, and there is little room in the middle seat to maneuver around the anchors.

  • "The 2017 Impala's portfolio starts with its roomy interior. This is one of the main reasons to consider this class of car, and compared to a typical midsize sedan, the Impala gives rear passengers plenty of space to stretch out." -- Edmunds
  • "The rebirth of Chevy's biggest sedan brought with it a roomy interior that's even more appreciated than its sharp suit. This is most true in mid-level LT and top-line Premier trims, the latter with perforated leather seating (base models have premium cloth, mid-grade mixes cloth and Leatherette). This 5-passenger sedan has generous legroom even for rear-seat passengers." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • Interior space is more generous than in the last Impala. Front seats offer lots of room, but they are too flat to provide much lateral support in aggressive turns. Even tall passengers will be comfortable in the rear, which is wide enough for three-across seating and has enough contour to make outboard passengers comfortable." -- MSN (2014)

Interior Features

Standard features in the 2017 Chevy Impala include a six-speaker audio system, a USB port, satellite radio, an infotainment system with a 4.2-inch display, Bluetooth phone connectivity, and OnStar with 4G LTE and a built-in Wi-Fi hot spot. Optional features include a keyless ignition and remote start, a rearview camera, dual-zone automatic climate control, the MyLink infotainment system with an 8-inch touch screen, an 11-speaker Bose sound system, forward collision warning, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, rear parking sensors, rear cross traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control.

The Impala's infotainment system has a sharp display on its 8-inch touch screen and features common functions such as swiping or pinch-to-zoom. Smartphone integration is possible through Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. Other controls like climate and volume, which are styled in traditional knobs instead of on a touch pad, are easy to use.

  • "Chevy deserves kudos for its supportive front seats and easy-to-reach buttons and knobs to control audio and climate functions, in addition to the 8-inch touch-screen display found in LT and Premier grades." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "It's fair to say that these qualities are big-car basics, but we're also fond of the Impala's technology. Standard on all but the base LS trim is the 8-inch MyLink touchscreen infotainment system, which has crisp graphics and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration." -- Edmunds
  • "Learning from Ford's MyFord Touch infotainment fiasco, Chevy proceeded cautiously with its MyLink system in the new Impala. The second generation of MyLink, with its optional eight-inch touch screen, provides a wealth of features, such as capacity for 10 Bluetooth devices and 1000 contacts; 'natural' voice recognition; response to swipe, flick, click, and drag input gestures; and static movie-play capability. There are redundant knobs and steering-wheel buttons for entertainment and climate controls, high-res 3-D navigation mapping, and four distinct menu screen choices. Plus this wow feature: The screen rises out of the dash at the touch of a button to open a secret storage bin that can be locked shut and disabled by typing in a four-digit code." -- Car and Driver (2014)

Cargo

The 2017 Impala boasts 18.8 cubic feet of cargo space in the trunk, which is one of the highest capacities among large cars. The back seat also folds down to accommodate larger or longer items.

  • "The standard 60/40-split folding rear seatbacks add useful additional cargo space to the already ample 18.8-cubic-foot trunk." -- Edmunds (2016)
  • The trunk of the Impala is quite large, measuring 18.8 cubic feet, only a smidge more than the previous Impala. The deck sits quite high, which makes for a shallower opening, but also makes it easier to load and unload items." -- Autoblog (2014)
