Scorecard

Interior: 8.8

Test drivers praise the 2016 Chevrolet Impala's luxurious cabin materials and attractive design. They note that the rear seat is incredibly spacious, and the Impala has a roomy trunk for the class. Most critics are also pleased with the MyLink infotainment system's straightforward functionality.

  • "The Chevy Impala for 2016 may be considered a mainstream vehicle, but inside it feels more like a premium or even luxury sedan." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The look and feel of interior materials set a new standard for Chevrolet and exceed what some luxury brands offer. A couple of minor trim misalignments mar the overall impact, but the Impala's interior is exceptional. It had a feel closer to what I expect from Audi than from Chevrolet." -- The Detroit Free Press (2014)
  • "The Impala's dynamic, modern exterior writes checks that its interior is pleased to cash." -- Edmunds (2015)
  • "Between its limo-sized interior, clever infotainment system and tastefully understated styling, the Impala appeals to those in search of a cushy, feature-packed four-door." -- Left Lane News (2015)

Seating

The 2016 Impala seats five and comes standard with a power-adjustable driver’s seat. Leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats and a power-adjustable front passenger seat are available. Test drivers say the front seats offer ample comfort and report outward visibility from the driver’s seat is excellent. They agree that the rear seat offers a generous amount of space.

  • "We found the front seats comfortable and attractive. Rear-seat legroom is excellent." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "A generous wheelbase gives the Impala serious passenger space front and rear. Four 6-footers could do a cross-country road trip in perfect comfort; that's what we expect from a large sedan, and the Impala certainly delivers." -- Edmunds (2015)
  • "Passenger room is abundant, especially in the palatial rear seat area, and there's also impressive material quality to go with the spatial quantity: available perforated leather upholstery, sueded microfiber, contrast stitching and soft-touch materials give the cabin a decidedly upscale feel." -- Left Lane News (2015)
  • "Even driver visibility was better than what we've come to expect from some of today's fullsize sedans." -- Autoblog (2014)

Interior Features

Standard features in the 2016 Chevy Impala include a six-speaker audio system, a USB port, satellite radio, Bluetooth phone connectivity and OnStar with 4G LTE and a Wi-Fi hot spot. Optional features include Bluetooth audio streaming, Apple CarPlay, navigation, an 11-speaker Bose audio system, dual-zone automatic climate control, forward collision warning, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control and the MyLink infotainment system with an 8-inch touch screen.

Reviewers like the individual controls for audio volume and climate settings, as well as the responsive MyLink voice command system and redundant steering wheel buttons for some functions. They say that MyLink has sharp graphics and note that it is easy to enter a destination into the navigation system, though a few complain the touch screen can be slow to respond to inputs.

  • "Unlike some rivals, Chevy's big sedan doesn't feel the need to make all controls touch-oriented. Settings for climate, volume, fan speed and the like are easily changed with buttons and dials." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Redundant dashboard knobs and steering wheel controls give users alternate options for controlling MyLink, and there's also a voice recognition system for hands-free calls, destination entering, song selection and more. Its 'natural language' capability can recognize a staggering number of phrases - effectively eliminating the need for the clunky and cumbersome memorized commands." -- Left Lane News (2015)
  • When specified, the 8-inch MyLink touchscreen for audio, navigation and phone functions really ties the room together, providing crisp, high-resolution graphics (except for the oddly grainy rearview camera view) and an intuitive interface like that of a smartphone[.] We would ask only for quicker and more predictable responses to touch inputs. …" -- Edmunds (2015)
  • "Speaking of destinations, entering nav instructions manually now requires only one step to enter all the information, instead of separate steps for 'city' and 'state,' for example. In other words, it's more like the nav system in your phone, and that's good." -- Popular Mechanics (2014)

Cargo

The 2016 Impala has 18.8 cubic feet of trunk space, which is good for the class. Test drivers are impressed with the spaciousness of the Impala's trunk and note that the standard split-folding rear seat makes the space more useful. They also appreciate the abundance of small-item storage in the cabin, including a hidden compartment behind the touch screen in the center stack.

  • "The standard 60/40-split-folding rear seatback adds useful additional cargo space to the already ample 18.8-cubic-foot trunk." -- Edmunds (2015)
  • "There's lots of storage space for drinks, accessories and snacks. A little cubby in front of the center console storage fits a mobile phone. Door pockets will fit an average-sized water bottle perfectly." -- New Car Test Drive (2014)
  • "The interior has lots of storage cubbies, including a hidden, lockable compartment behind the touch screen." -- The Detroit Free Press (2014)
  • "A standard 60/40-split folding backseat expands the Impala's already deep trunk. The opening between the passenger compartment and cargo area when the seats are down is sizable, and the backrest folds flat with the cargo floor." -- Cars.com (2014)
