2009 Chevrolet HHR Review

The 2009 Chevrolet HHR has high fuel economy ratings for its class, but it does nothing else very well. There are other wagons that offer more cargo space and more powerful engines.

Pros & Cons

  • High fuel economy for the class
  • Base engine slow on highway and turns
  • No available all-wheel drive
  • HHR pulls to one side when braking

2009 Chevrolet HHR Overview

The HHR has three available four-cylinder engines, as well as two manual transmissions or an automatic transmission, depending on the trim. Few reviewers liked the power in any of the engines, especially the base engine. Test drivers liked the smooth ride throughout the city and highway, but they said the steering is slow to react. When braking, a few drivers also noticed that the HHR does not stop straight. The HHR does not have available all-wheel drive, which is standard or available on some other competitors. The fuel economy on the base engine with an automatic transmission is high for the class at 22/30 mpg city/highway.

The flexible interior space of the 2009 Chevrolet HHR is a highlight. The back seat received some criticism for only being able to hold two passengers comfortably. However, reviewers said that both the front and rear seats are supportive. The front passenger seat and back seat fold flat. There’s only 25.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row, but with the rear seats folded, the cargo space totals 57.7 cubic feet. There are other vehicles in the class that have a lot more cargo space behind the second row. All three HHR trims include cruise control, remote keyless entry, a six-speaker sound system and satellite radio. Features on higher trims or features that were optional when the HHR was new include a panoramic sunroof, backup camera, eight-way power driver’s seat with lumbar support, leather upholstery, heated seats and a premium sound system.

The 2009 Subaru Outback has a higher safety score than the HHR. The Outback has three available engines, comes with standard all-wheel drive and has 33.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row.

The 2009 Ford Taurus X offers a lot more cargo space than both vehicles with 47 cubic feet of available space behind the third row. The Taurus X can seat up to seven, and reviewers liked its powerful six-cylinder engine.
