2012 Chevrolet Express Overview

As a work van for shuttling job site equipment or hotel guests, reviewers say the Chevrolet Express will serve you well. However, if you’re considering the Chevrolet Express because you want seating for eight and lots of cargo space for you and your kids, you’ll be better served by nearly any minivan or three-row SUV on the market. The Chevy Express offers few of the features that family-oriented shoppers want.

As passenger vans go, the Express has a fairly high towing capacity and can seat up to 15 people. Plus, it offers all-wheel drive, and most of its rivals don’t. However, the 2012 Chevrolet Express isn’t very easy to drive, due to its large turning circle. Reviewers also say that it has sloppy steering and an underpowered V6 engine.

Overall, if you need a work van with lots of capacity for people or gear, the 2012 Chevrolet Express is a good choice. However, if you can make do with an SUV or a minivan, you’ll get many more features and a much more pleasant driving experience for your money.

Other Vans to Consider

Anyone looking at the Chevrolet Express should also consider the Ford E-Series. Some reviewers say it drives a bit better than the Express, although it costs a little more.  Test drivers especially love Ford’s Work Solutions system that’s available on the E-Series. It’s an in-dash computer system that allows you to keep track of tools, monitor your fleet and even print invoices. This system is also available on the Ford Transit Connect, which can’t hold as many people or as much cargo, but is far easier to drive and more maneuverable around town.

If you need even more capacity than the Chevrolet Express has, check out the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. Its starting price is a lot higher than the Express’, but it can hold more than 500 cubic feet of cargo depending on the configuration, which is significantly more than any of its competitors. Testers also say it’s a bit more maneuverable than the Chevrolet Express.

The Chevrolet Express is available as a cargo or passenger van in 1500, 2500 and 3500 models and in LS and LT trims. Depending on the model, it can be equipped with up to 15 seats, two- or all-wheel drive, one of five different engine options and a regular or a long wheelbase. The Express doesn’t see any significant changes for 2012.

  • "The Express and (GMC) Savana excel as work trucks, even if they are often overshadowed by Ford's E-series.” -- Car and Driver
  • "Like other large vans, Express and similar GMC Savana have all the room most users will ever need, though sheer bulk makes them thirsty with fuel, a handful in traffic, and too big for some garages. The available AWD, 60/40 split driver-side rear doors, and side access panels are useful features.” -- Consumer Guide
