2017 Chevrolet Equinox Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2017 Chevrolet Equinox was new.

Scorecard

Interior: 7.9

The 2017 Chevy Equinox has one of the most spacious, comfortable cabins in the class. There's plenty of headroom and legroom in both rows, and the second-row seats conveniently slide and recline for added comfort and flexibility. The Equinox's cargo capacity is just above average for the class, but that’s because Chevrolet prioritized passenger space over cargo space. If you need lots of storage space, there are better options, like the Honda CR-V.

The standard touch screen is easy to operate but could be quicker to respond to inputs. While the primary dashboard controls are large and legible, small secondary controls clutter the space and can be difficult for the driver to reach. The Equinox's interior materials are better than those of some competitors, but some offer a more attractive and simple dashboard layout.

If you plan to stream music over Bluetooth, be aware that it’s only available in the top two trim levels.

  • "Other drawbacks include mediocre interior materials and the limited availability of Bluetooth audio, which puts this Chevy behind the times." -- Edmunds
  • The high-quality interior is attractive overall, but marred by too many buttons and small dials." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)
  • "Reflecting GM's commitment to improving interior refinement after years of being trampled by its Asian competitors in material quality and fit finish, the Equinox's five-passenger cabin is a well-designed space with a simple yet attractive dashboard and an easily navigable center stack." -- Left Lane News (2016)

Seating

The Equinox's seats are comfortable even over long trips, and they’re roomy for all occupants. In the back, there's plenty of legroom, and those seats slide and recline for additional versatility and comfort. While overall outward visibility is good, the Equinox's rear-seat headrests may somewhat hinder the driver's view out the back window.

Cloth upholstery is standard in the five-seat Equinox. Leather seating is available, as are heated and power-adjustable front seats.

  • "Seating comfort is good all around, with particular credit due to the luxuriously roomy backseat with its slide-and-recline functionality." -- Edmunds
  • "With well-bolstered seats, front and back and lots of legroom for all passengers, it's easy to get comfortable, even with a full load of people." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)
  • "Headroom and legroom are ample. The seats are long-haul supportive. Visibility is good for the most part, though tall rear headrests partially obscure the view aft." -- Consumer Guide (2012)

Interior Features

The 2017 Chevrolet Equinox's standard features include a USB port, a rearview camera, and an audio system with a 7-inch touch screen, Bluetooth phone connectivity, and OnStar with 4G LTE and a built-in Wi-Fi hot spot. Optional features include automatic climate control, a power sunroof, remote start, rear parking sensors, forward collision alert, side blind zone alert, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning, an eight-speaker Pioneer sound system, Bluetooth streaming audio, satellite radio, smartphone app integration, a Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system, and navigation.

Much like a smartphone, the Chevy Equinox's standard touch screen allows you to organize the menu screens to your liking. The system is also fairly easy to use, though it can sometimes be slow to respond to your touch.

Of note is the lack of standard Bluetooth audio streaming, which allows you to play music from your smartphone through the infotainment system. You’ll have to purchase one of the two top-most trims to get this feature. The main climate and audio controls are large and easy to read, but the dashboard is cluttered with numerous small buttons that are hard to use and out of the driver's reach.

  • The standard 7-inch touchscreen interface features customizable menus similar to those on modern smartphones, and it's relatively easy to use. The available MyLink interface incorporates Bluetooth streaming audio capability and compatibility with popular smartphone apps. There are a few weak spots, though, such as the touchscreen's occasionally slow processing times and missed responses to touch inputs. The lack of standard Bluetooth audio (unavailable on L and LS trims) is also lamentable." -- Edmunds
  • "Corresponding buttons and dials are rather small and numerous." -- Kelley Blue Book (2014)
  • "Primary gauges are large and clear. Standard audio and climate controls are mounted high on the dashboard and are generally simple to operate, but a few of the controls may be slightly out of reach for some drivers." -- Consumer Guide (2013)

Cargo

The 2017 Equinox has 31.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row and 63.7 cubic feet with the second row folded. That's slightly below average for a 2-row SUV, a class in which many rivals provide more than 70 cubic feet of maximum cargo space. The Equinox does have an available height-adjustable power liftgate that helps you avoid hitting the garage ceiling when unloading cargo.

What the Equinox takes from cargo space, however, it gives to passenger space. So while the Equinox has less cargo space than the Honda CR-V, which is 10 inches shorter than the Chevy, the Honda has less interior space for passengers.

  • "The downside to all this room being devoted to passengers is that the Equinox offers less cargo space than many competitors." -- Edmunds
  • "Despite being comfortable and versatile, the Equinox doesn't make the best use of its exterior bulk inside. For example, even though the Honda CR-V is nearly 10 inches shorter, it boasts roughly six more cubic feet of storage behind the rear seat." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)
